Americans spent more in Sept., but saved less

By msnbc.com wire reports

WASHINGTON ? Americans spent in September at three times the pace of the previous month, even though their incomes barely budged. They financed their spending binges by saving at the lowest level since the start of the Great Recession.

Consumer spending rose 0.6 percent last month, the Commerce Department said Friday. The gain was driven by a big rise in purchases of durable goods, such as autos.

Consumers earned only 0.1 percent more after their income fell by the same amount in August. And after adjusting for inflation, their after-tax incomes fell 0.1 percent last month ? the third straight monthly decline.

As a result, they saved less. The savings rate fell to 3.6 percent, the lowest level since December 2007.

Expectations were high after the government said Thursday that consumer spending helped fuel annual growth of 2.5 percent in the July-September quarter, the best quarterly expansion in a year.

Consumer spending is closely watched because it accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. It grew at an annual rate of 2.4 percent in the third quarter. That's more than triple the growth in the April-June quarter.

The economy would have to grow at nearly double the third-quarter pace to make a dent in the unemployment rate, which has stayed near 9 percent since the recession officially ended more than two years ago.

Economists doubt consumers can keep spending like they did this summer without earning more. Many are struggling with higher prices for food and gas. For spending gains to be sustained, employers need to step up hiring.

In recent months, job growth has stagnated. Employers have added an average of only 72,000 jobs per month in the past five months. That's far below the 100,000 per month needed to keep up with population growth. And it's down from an average of 180,000 in the first four months of this year.

Employers added only 103,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate remained 9.1 percent for a third straight month.

The government releases the October employment report on Nov. 4.

And spending could tumble next year if Congress fails to extend a Social Security tax cut, which gave most Americans an extra $1,000 to $2,000 this year, or long-term unemployment benefits. Both expire at the end of the year.

Paul Ashworth, chief U.S. economist for Capital Economics, predicts that overall growth will cool in the fourth quarter and next year. He predicts growth of just 1.5 percent for all of 2012.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody's Analytics, is more optimistic. He expects roughly the same 2.5 percent growth in the October-December quarter and also in the first three months of next year.?

Associated Press contributed to this report.

DeWitt leads AFA to 42-0 win against New Mexico

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? When Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson went out in the first quarter with an injury against New Mexico, there was no reason for the Falcons to panic.

Backup Connor Dietz took over and led the Falcons to a 42-0 victory against the winless Lobos on Saturday.

"It was one of those times where Tim went down and I had to step up for my team," Dietz said. "They all made it really easy for me to come in. They all did their part, which just makes my job that much easier."

Dietz led the Falcons (4-4, 1-3 Mountain West) to 335 rushing yards, running for 87 on six carries, including a 39-yard burst up the middle with a minute remaining in the first half that put them up 35-0.

"It was just a draw," he said of the long score. "The defense was playing back and our offensive line had some great blocks and our fullback led up on the linebacker. It made my running lane pretty easy so all I had to do was run forward.

"As a ball carrier, that's the best feeling you can have, because you see daylight and green and all you have to do is not get touched."

Fullback Mike DeWitt had four touchdown runs for Air Force.

"We're fortunate to have an awesome backup quarterback," he said. "He does a great job. He's always ready and getting warm on the sideline and he did a great job today. It's not good to lose your starting quarterback but it's nothing big so I'm sure he'll be back in there. It was just business as usual."

Air Force coach Troy Calhoun also had no qualms about putting Dietz out there.

"To be able to have Connor Dietz available and to be able to help us as a football team is a real plus," he said.

New Mexico (0-8, 0-3) had 63 yards from Crusoe Gongbay on 10 carries. The Lobos totaled 223 yards in getting shut out for a second straight week.

"Everyone is mad," Gongbay said. "Mad after every game."

The Falcons scored their first touchdown when Austin Briehl recovered a teammates' fumble in the end zone. DeWitt scored three straight touchdowns, going in from 4, 12 and 3.

Some California sex offenders' addresses same as foster homes (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? The state of California should immediately investigate why more than 1,000 sex offenders have the same addresses as licensed foster homes and facilities housing children, a new report by the state auditor said.

The findings posted on the state auditor website on Thursday matched up a California sex offender database with the Department of Social Service's list of registered foster homes. The report said more than 600 of the cases where addresses matched were "high risk."

Social Services got the list of addresses to investigate in July of this year, the report said. So far, 99 percent of the addresses have been investigated.

Those investigations have led to 36 sex offenders being barred from foster homes, four foster home licenses revoked and another four suspended temporarily. Sex offenders were found to be living or present at four of the foster homes in question.

In a letter to the California governor and legislature, Elaine M. Howle, the state auditor, urged Social Services to continue to match up sex offenders's addresses with licensed foster homes.

The findings came in a wide-ranging audit on the state's child welfare services for abused and neglected children that also found many counties do not investigate child deaths caused by abuse or neglect.

Although such investigations are not required by law, the report said county welfare services could learn how to take better care of foster or abused children by looking into the cases.

(AP) ? A 13-year-old boy, trapped for five days inside fallen debris, used a rock in a desperate attempt to dig a hole and free himself from a building that collapsed in a massive earthquake that struck eastern Turkey, his uncle said Friday.

Rescuers from Azerbaijan pulled Ferhat Tokay out of the debris of a multistory building early on Friday, the latest survivor to emerge from the devastation of the 7-2-magnitude quake that leveled buildings and killed at least 570 people.

Some 2,500 were injured in the temblor that brought down about 2,000 buildings and left thousands homeless.

Tokay was working in a shoe shop on the ground floor of a multistory building in Ercis when the quake hit on Sunday.

"With a rock, he tried to open up a hole," the uncle, Sahin Tokay, told NTV television hours after the rescue. "He thumped on walls to try to open up a space for himself."

Tokay said the boy also placed shoes under his head and used them as a pillow to sleep, peering through a tiny gap to distinguish between day and night.

"He was hungry on the first day, but the hunger pangs later disappeared," Tokay said.

The state-run Anatolia news agency said the boy drank rain water which helped keep him alive.

For the family who had anxiously waited outside the crumbled building for days, Ferhat's rescue was a miracle.

Rescue teams sent the boy's father and other relatives away from the site to get some rest in the early hours of Friday, saying there was no chance of finding him alive. Soon after, they were called back with news that the crew had reached him.

"He didn't even have a scratch on him!" the uncle said.

Television footage showed the boy smiling at people standing around his hospital bed.

"He said he was hungry and asked for food," he uncle said.

"He also got his father to promise not to play tile rummy (in coffee houses) anymore" Tokay said in reference to a popular pass-time for men in Turkey.

The 213-person team from the Azeri Special Risk Rescue Service, equipped with sniffer dogs, have pulled out 10 survivors since arriving to offer services late Sunday, including Tokay and 18-year-old Imdat Padak who was brought out late Thursday.

Attesting to the dangerous nature of the rescue operations, rubble fell on a sniffer dog called Cip while searching for Padak inside a gap, seriously injuring its paws, the Azerbaijani team said.

The government's crisis management center said a total of 187 people have been freed from rubble alive. Search and rescue operations have ended in the provincial capital of Van, but were continuing in Ercis.

Turkish authorities delivered more tents after acknowledging distribution problems that included aid trucks being looted before they reached Ercis. Tents, prefabricated homes, blankets and heaters also started arriving from a dozen countries, after Turkey said asked for assistance to help shelter people left homeless in near-freezing conditions.

Israel, which has a troubled political relationship with Turkey, sent emergency housing units, blankets and clothing. Britain, Ireland, Germany, Russia, Romania and Ukraine also contributed.

About 2,000 buildings have been destroyed and authorities declared another 3,700 buildings unfit for habitation.

HP Pavilion dm4-2180us (Office Depot)

The HP Pavilion dm4-2180us ($799 list at Office Depot), a mainstream laptop, will last you seven hours when you're on the road. Its Intel Core i5 CPU and 6GB of RAM are a powerful combination; whether your work involves day-to-day office tasks or something as strenuous as photo editing, the dm4-2180us has you covered. But there are other laptops out there that have more features and better performance for the price.

Design
The dm4-2180us's steel grey aluminum chassis has a brushed lid, like the Samsung QX411-W01 ($799.99 list, 4 stars). The design adds sophistication to what would otherwise be a metallic brick. The dm4-2180us weighs 4.33 pounds, which puts it on the lighter side of other 14-inch laptops. It's lighter than the Asus U46E-BAL6 ($899.99 list, 4 stars) (4.9 pounds), Samsung QX411-W01 (5.11 pounds), and Toshiba Satellite L745-S4210 ($639.99 list, 3.5 stars) (4.5 pounds).

The 14-inch widescreen has standard 1,366-by-768 resolution, which amounts to 720p HD viewing for online videos and downloaded content. The chiclet keyboard is full-size, but with a shortened Shift key to make room for the arrow buttons. As far as typing experiences go, it's no Lenovo ThinkPad (one of the best typing experiences around), but it will satisfy. The multi-touchpad has a light textured finish, and the right and left mouse buttons were easy to click.

Features
The dm4-2180us has an impressive offering of features, considering the price. It comes with the standard ports: three USB 2.0, HDMI and VGA video, audio and mic jacks, Ethernet, and SD/MMC card reader. The standout features are a fingerprint reader, which will serve to further protect your data from possible intruders, and WiDi 2.0, which is a wireless solution you can use to stream 1080p HD content from your laptop to your HDTV (provided that you have a Netgear Push2TV receiver, a $99 option). The Asus U46E-BAL5 also has WiDi 2.0 as well as a faster USB 3.0 port and WiMAX, a 3G mobile broadband technology that will keep road warriors connected wherever they are. The dm4-2180us may not have WiMAX, but it does include 802.11n Wi-Fi, as well as a DVD-RW drive.

The dm4-2180us has a 640GB, 5,400rpm hard drive, which is the second largest hard drive you could hope to have in this category and at this price. However, the Asus U46E-BAL6 has it beat, providing 750GB of storage space. That said, 640GB should be enough to store a music library, documents, and any other downloadable content you might want to hoard away?only the most enthusiastic downloaders will require more space.

There's some bloatware on the drive, namely a few of HP's own proprietary programs. But with the bloatware comes some useful programs, which includes a free version of Microsoft Office (with ads), Adobe Photoshop Elements 9, and Adobe Premiere Elements 9.

Buyers wanting more peace of mind may want to take advantage of Office Depot's several extended protection and service plans. Their basic two-year protection plan ($169.99) extends this warranty for another year, and includes 24/7 tech support. Adding premium coverage for drops and spills, and extending battery coverage for a second year costs $259.99, and a four-year plan, offering all of the same warranty and accident coverage, including 24/7 tech support, can be had for $349.99.

Performance
HP Pavilion dm4-2180us (Office Depot) With its 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-2430M CPU and 6GB of RAM, the dm4-2180us made quick work of media benchmark tests, like our Handbrake video encoder (1 minute 49 seconds) and Photoshop CS5 (4:03). It beat out the Asus U46E-BAL5 (1:53 on Handbrake; 4:10 on CS5) and Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) ($750 direct, 4 stars) (1:58 on Handbrake; 4:10 on CS5) by insignificant margins on both tests.

I saw similar results on our PCMark 7 test of day-to-day tasks. The dm4-2180us (2,316) scored 105 points higher than the Asus U46E-BAL5 (2,215) and beat out the Dell Inspiron 14z by a slim margin (2,308)?again not a huge difference. Both systems will be able to open applications and browse the Web equally as fast.

Because the dm4-2180us is equipped with Intel integrated graphics, it's not going to give you much in the way of gaming performance. Its 21 frame per second (fps) score on Crysis (DirectX 10) alone indicates that this system isn't going to the Steam market. However, it will lend itself to some less-intensive titles, like Team Fortress 2, World of Warcraft, and Limbo. If you're looking for a machine that can handle more advanced titles, you might have to go for something much more expensive and geared toward gaming, like the Alienware M11xr3 ($1,099 direct, 4 stars).

Battery performance was solid; the dm4-2180us's 55Wh, 6-cell battery lasted 7 hours 50 minutes on our MobileMark 2007 test. It lasted 31 minutes more than the Asus U46E-BAL5's 74WH battery, but couldn't beat out the 8:38 garnered by the Dell Inspiron 14z (Core i5) (65Wh).

The HP Pavilion dm4-2180us is a great all-around performer and has added features, like a fingerprint reader and WiDi 2.0 that make it well worth its price. However, the Asus U46E-BAL5 has more to give? and not only in hard drive space. Travelers will get much needed use out of the WiMAX broadband on the Asus, and USB 3.0 will help transferring data at faster speeds than USB 2.0 can offer. But if you have no use for advanced wireless features, then the Editors' Choice Dell Inspiron 14z has a backlit keyboard, USB 3.0, and a battery life that's hard to beat.

BENCHMARK TEST RESULTS:

No saint, but no racist

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:54 p.m. ET Oct. 26, 2011

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas has admitted he is no saint but denied directing any racist abuse toward Sevilla's Frederic Kanoute during a heated encounter on Saturday.

Kanoute and Fabregas were involved in an altercation at the close of the 0-0 draw which saw Kanoute sent off and Fabregas facing accusations he racially insulted the Mali striker.

Fabregas immediately denied the reports on Twitter and returned to the subject on Wednesday.

"I've never worried about it, I know what I said," the Spain international said. "I spoke with Kanoute and we said what we had to say.

"Like every other football player, I'm no saint, but I never said anything racist and no one is saying any different."

Kanoute and Fabregas exchanged words after Kanoute had kicked the ball off the spot with Lionel Messi readying to take an added-time penalty. Sevilla goalkeeper Javi Varas saved Messi's effort after the delay to preserve the draw at the Camp Nou.

In England, police are investigating Chelsea's John Terry following allegations he racially abused Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a match.

Sprint trying to fix iPhone 4S speed issue

Apple

By Suzanne Choney

Sprint iPhone 4S customers say they're still getting slow data speeds with their new phones, and the wireless carrier, which has spent big bucks to bring the phone to customers, is reportedly working on a solution with Apple.

User complaints are being shared on various websites, and on several threads on Sprint's Community Forum, including these: "iPhone 4S on 3G data network too slow to be useful" and "iPhone now on the slowest network. post your zip if you have slow data coverage."

An internal Sprint email to employees says Apple and Sprint are working to solve the "confirmed nationwide issue" about the slow data speed, according to The Next Web:

There was no information about what the cause of the issues are or what the expected resolution date might be. The email did contain a reference to a ?Service Settings? update, which sounds like it could be referring to the carrier settings file that contains access point info for the carriers.

When we asked Sprint about the problem last week, a representative for the carrier said it was "carefully monitoring the performance of the 3G network. We are looking into a small number of reports of slow data speeds when using the iPhone 4S, however there are also reports showing that Sprint's network is the fastest."

The Sprint rep was talking specifically about a report in Gizmodo, which gave the carrier respectable marks.

Our friends at Laptop recently gave Sprint's iPhone 4S speed mixed grades, compared to AT&T and Verizon Wireless:

The AT&T version of the iPhone is the only one that supports speeds up to 14.4 Mbps on the carrier's HSPA network, while the Verizon and Sprint versions are tied to older and slower EV-DO networks. So it wasn't a surprise that AT&T turned in the fastest download and upload speeds in our three testing locations using the Speedtest.net app.

The AT&T iPhone 4S?pulled?off an overall average rate of 970 Kbps for downloads, and 270 Kbps for uploads.?By comparison, Verizon only mustered 380 Kbps on the download and Sprint was even slower at 280 Kbps. Verizon's iPhone 4S consistently offered the slowest upload speeds, with an average of 100 Kbps versus a not-much-better 170 Kbps for Sprint.?

We've asked both Sprint and Apple to comment on their attempts to fix the problem, and will update this post if we hear back.

But comments like those of "jd_pruitt" on Sprint's forums are typical of some of the frustrations:

... when listening to Pandora the stream would stop for a few minutes and start again. Browsing is noticeably slower from my former carrier AT&T. Translation: Yeah, it's pretty lame.

Eddie Murphy, Brett Ratner Can't Agree On 'Beverly Hills Cop 4'

'Tower Heist' director tells MTV News he's 'hoping' to get sequel made, while Murphy seems to have counted out the movie franchise.
By Kevin P. Sullivan, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

There seems to be two varying opinions on whether "Beverly Hill Cop 4" will ever happen. Ask the attached director, Brett Ratner, and he'll tell you he wants to make it happen with Eddie Murphy. But the response is ... rather different if you put the same question to the A-list actor.

MTV News recently caught up with Ratner as he promoted "Tower Heist," out this Friday and starring yes, Murphy. The director sounded hopeful about another "Cop" sequel.

"I think one day, I'm hoping, because it is one of the most iconic characters ever," Ratner told us. "Eddie does not go anywhere in the world where they're not like, 'Axel Foley, what's up?' more than 'Eddie Murphy.' It is something that our hope and desire is to get it made."

Much like he did with MTV News, Ratner has spoken on several occasions about his hopes for a fourth movie featuring the legendary Axel Foley, a Detroit cop who finds himself solving crimes in the very posh Beverly Hills.

In the latest issue of Rolling Stone, however, Eddie Murphy tells the magazine that the possibilities for a fourth "Beverly Hills Cop" film are dead.

"They're not doing it," Murphy told the magazine. According to the actor, the proposed screenplays didn't really support the making of a new film. "None of the movie scripts were right; it was trying to force the premise. If you have to force something, you shouldn't be doing it. It was always a rehash of the old thing. It was always wrong," Murphy says.

But Murphy has other ideas for the beloved character. "What I'm trying to do now is produce a TV show starring Axel Foley's son, and Axel is the chief of police now in Detroit," Murphy revealed. "I'd do the pilot, show up here and there."

Ratner himself acknowledged the challenges involved with revisiting the "Beverly Hills Cop" franchise. "It's a hard nut to crack, especially since there are three that exist before that. It's a hard thing," Ratner admitted, before adding that the three films allow him to see what worked in the series and what didn't.

Would you like to see a new "Beverly Hills Cop" movie? Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter!

Disconnect between La Russa, bullpen hurts Cards

By JAIME ARON

updated 3:58 a.m. ET Oct. 25, 2011

ARLINGTON, Texas - Tony La Russa has won a lot of games over a lot of years by deploying relief pitchers differently than most managers. His reputation may have worked against the St. Louis Cardinals in Game 5 of the World Series.

Well, that and baseball's reliance on the 1900s technology of wall phones in bullpens even though they're apparently easily drowned out by raucous fans.

Bullpen coach Derek Lilliquist misunderstood La Russa twice with the game on the line, forcing the Cardinals into an unfavorable matchup between left-handed reliever Mark Rzepczynski and Texas' right-handed slugger Mike Napoli with one out and the bases loaded. The Rangers' catcher took advantage by nailing a two-run double that gave Texas a 4-2 victory Monday night and put them one win from the franchise's first championship.

"That phone in a loud ballpark, it's not an unusual problem," La Russa said. "I mean, it doesn't make it right, but ... "

The bottom of the eighth inning was a comedy of errors for St. Louis. It played out like something from the "Can you hear me now?" cell phone commercials.

It started with Lilliquist only having Rzepczynski warm up, when La Russa really wanted both him and right-handed closer Jason Motte to get loose.

La Russa realized the problem once he put in Rzepczynski and saw no one else warming up, so he called back and ask for Motte again. This time, Lilliquist told Lance Lynn to start throwing, even though he was only supposed to be used in an emergency.

La Russa also said the noise problem is not unusual with bullpens "that are right amidst the fans and excitement." The visitors' bullpen at Rangers Ballpark is in left-center field, with fans on either side.

"Maybe we need to come up with some ear mikes or something," La Russa said.

Considering all the technology available these days, there's got to be a better way to do this ? right?

"Yeah, smoke signals from the dugout," La Russa said. "There are times, like what happened in Philadelphia (during the first round of the playoffs). The phone went out, and so we used cell phones. And then the Phillies brought down walkie talkies, and they fixed the phone."

The eighth inning began falling apart for St. Louis when Octavio Dotel took over for starter Chris Carpenter and gave up a leadoff double.

An intentional walk followed, then with one out, Rzepczynski came in for a lefty-lefty matchup with David Murphy. Texas could've gone to a right-handed hitter, but stuck with Murphy. He hit a comebacker that could've started a double play. Instead, it ricocheted off Rzepczynski's leg to second baseman Nick Punto, loading the bases.

"He made a great pitch, but it happens," La Russa said. "Sometimes it happens for us, today it happened against us."

Rzepczynski said he wasn't surprised to remain in to face Napoli because there was a lefty on deck, Mitch Moreland.

"I've done that all year, where if there's a righty in between, I'm going to go out there and get the chance to get the righty out," Rzepczynski said.

La Russa added that he didn't think it was a matchup doomed to fail.

"We had a chance with Rzepczynski's stuff to get Napoli on the first pitch," La Russa said. "And then he put a nice swing on a breaking ball."

Napoli drove a pitch into the wall in right-center field on one hop. Rzepczynski struck out Moreland, then La Russa went to the mound and tried bringing in Motte. Only he hadn't warmed up yet. So when he called for the righty, in came Lynn.

"I said, 'Why are you here?'" La Russa said.

With first base open, Lynn was told to intentionally walk Ian Kinsler. La Russa then returned to the mound and finally got the reliever he'd wanted several batters earlier, Motte. Only now St. Louis was down by two runs and the bases were loaded.

The bearded closer struck out Elvis Andrus on three pitches, which only made the regrets of what might've been tougher for Cardinals fans to swallow once they learned of the wacky breakdown.

Rzepczynski and Motte didn't even know there was a mix-up until after the game.

"I go out there, the phone rings and we get going when we're told," Motte said. "I started throwing when I was told to start throwing."

And when was that?

"When Lance Lynn walked out," Motte said. "I don't need a whole lot of time anywhere."

Lilliquist said the problems were caused by noise from the fans.

"It was loud," he said. "A lot of places are like that. The phone is as good as any phone anywhere."

La Russa's constant mixing and matching of pitchers was celebrated as a big reason the Cardinals overcame a 10? game deficit down the stretch to make the postseason, and his deft handling of the bullpen helped them get past Philadelphia and Milwaukee in the first two rounds. But things haven't been the same since Motte closed out a victory in Game 1.

Relievers have given up eight runs over their last 11 innings. Motte lost Game 2, Mitchell Boggs allowed a game-breaking three-run homer ? to Napoli ? in Game 4 and Dotel was the loser in Game 5.

Now the Rangers head to St. Louis with a 3-2 lead in the series. The Cardinals are facing elimination, something no one needs to explain more than once.

Panel: Boys should get vaccine for HPV, too

A government panel wants young boys as well as girls to get the controversial HPV vaccine, in part to prevent them from spreading the sexually transmitted virus to girls.

The HPV vaccine has been recommended for young girls to protect them against cervical cancer and genital warts for the last five years. But the vaccine has been slow to catch on ? only about a third of adolescent girls have gotten all three shots.

Experts say the HPV vaccine could protect boys against genital warts and some kinds of cancers. But they also say vaccinating 11- and 12-year old boys could help prevent them from spreading the human papilloma virus to girls.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices made the recommendation Tuesday in a unanimous vote. Federal health officials usually adopt what the panel says and asks doctors and patients to follow the recommendations.

    5. Listeria on cantaloupe can't be washed away

The vaccine has been licensed for use in boys for two years but Tuesday's vote was the first to strongly recommend routine vaccination. Officials acknowledged the disappointing rate in girls encouraged them to take a new, hard look.

But if the expensive HPV vaccine has been a tough sell to the parents of girls, it may be even tougher for boys.

Last year, just 49 percent of adolescent girls had gotten at least the first of the recommended three HPV shots. Only a third had gotten all three doses.

"Pretty terrible," said Dr. Anne Schuchat, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention administrator who oversees the agency's immunization programs.

She attributed the low rates for girls to confusion or misunderstanding by parents that they can wait until their daughter becomes sexually active. It only works if the shots are given before a girl begins having sex.

'Worthwhile vaccine'
CDC experts advised the panel there is no evidence the vaccine can cause "mental retardation," a concern raised by Republican congresswoman Michele Bachmann in a Republican presidential candidate debate. The U.S. medical community repudiated Bachmann's claim, which she made as a swipe at a rival, Texas Governor Rick Perry, who issued an executive order in 2007 mandating girls get the HPV vaccine as part of a school immunization program.

Perry's order was later overturned.

"I think it's a worthwhile vaccine," said Dr. Jay Siwek, a professor of family medicine at Georgetown University Medical Center, who was not part of the panel.

Siwek said the only downside of the vaccine is cost, which is $360 for a course of three shots.

In his own practice, Siwek tells parents the vaccine protects against cancers that occur in boys -- mostly mouth and throat -- and it helps protect girls from cancer as well.

"If they have concerns about vaccinating children against a potential sexually transmitted disease in the future, I'd say that we routinely vaccinate kids against diseases that primarily occur in adults," he said.

"I'd also say that most people eventually get HPV infection and that once you get the infection, the vaccine won't help."

The vaccine is approved for use in boys and girls ages 9 to 26; but it is usually given to 11- and 12-year olds when they are scheduled to get other vaccines.

The committee also recommended the vaccination for males 13 through 21 years who have not been vaccinated previously or who have not completed the three-dose series.

HPV shot dilemma: Should gay boys be targeted?

Tuesday's vote follows recent studies that indicate the vaccine prevents anal cancer in males. A study that focused on gay men found it to be 75 percent effective. But while anal cancer has been increasing, it's still a fairly rare cancer in males, with only about 7,000 cases in the U.S. each year that are tied to the strains of viruses targeted in the HPV vaccine. In contrast, about vaccine-preventable 15,000 cervical cancers occur annually.

Some feel it's unlikely that most families will agree to get their sons vaccinated primarily to protect girls. The threat of genital warts hasn't been persuasive yet, either: Some data suggest that less than 1.5 percent of adolescent males have gotten the vaccine.

Its use against anal cancer may not be much of a selling point, said Dr. Ranit Mishori, a family practice doctor in Washington, D.C., and an assistant professor at the Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Opinion: HPV vaccine attack could harm ?innocent? girls

Some parents may say "'Why are you vaccinating my son against anal cancer? He's not gay! He's not ever going to be gay!' I can see that will come up," said Mishori, who supports the committee's recommendation.

There are two vaccines against HPV, but Tuesday's vote applies only to Merck & Co.'s Gardasil, which costs $130 a dose. The other vaccine wasn't tested for males.

An estimated 50 percent to 80 percent of men and women are infected with HPV in their lifestimes, although most clear the infection without developing symptoms or illness, according to the CDC.

Tablets Used 90 Minutes Per Day on Average [STUDY] (Mashable)

Americans who own tablet devices such as the iPad or Galaxy Tab use them frequently, a new study finds. According to research conducted by the Pew Research Center and The Economist Group, the 77% of tablet owners who use the device daily are on them an average of 90 minutes a day.

[More from Mashable: Apple Newsstand Drives 268% Increase in Digital Subscriptions at Conde Nast]

What are those tablet owners -- a category that now includes 11% of U.S. adults, according to Pew's estimates -- doing with their devices? After browsing the web, which two-thirds of tablet owners do on their tablets on a daily basis, the most popular activities are checking email (54%) and reading news (53%). One in four access social networks through the device, and a third play games on a daily basis. Another 17% read books, and 13% watch movies or videos.

Echoing findings from a similar study from the BBC, Pew found that tablets inspire broader and deeper news engagement. A third of users say they are turning to new sources for news on their tablets, and 42% regularly read in-depth news and articles on their devices.

[More from Mashable: Apple Could Release TV Set in 2012 [REPORT]]

Getting tablet owners to pay for this content is another matter, however. A mere 14% of those who regularly read news on their tablets have directly paid for content on the devices. Twenty-three percent do, however, pay for a print subscription that includes digital access -- meaning that more than a third are paying for news access in some form or other.

Typically, tablet news readers are accessing news primarily through the browser (40%). Another 21% are perusing news mainly through apps -- which perhaps suggests that publishers should invest greater resources in developing tablet-friendly versions of their websites and web apps, rather than apps formatted for operating systems like Android and iOS.

Zyprexa: FDA OKs Generic Version Of Schizophrenia And Bipolar Disorder Drug

WASHINGTON ? Federal health officials on Monday approved the first generic versions of the blockbuster drug Zyprexa, an expensive treatment for schizophrenia and bipolar mood disorder.

Zyprexa posted sales of $5.7 billion last year for drugmaker Eli Lilly & Co Inc., according to prescription tracking company IMS Health.

The new low-cost versions of the drug will be marketed by Indian generic drugmaker Dr. Reddy's Laboratories and by Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, based in Israel.

Zyprexa is part of a class of medications called atypical antipsychotics that effect levels of dopamine, a brain chemical that controls behavior, mood and movement. Doctors overwhelmingly embraced the drugs in the 1990s over older treatments, because they were thought to be less likely to cause side effects like muscle tremors and spasms. The newer medications have their own side effects; including weight gain, high blood sugar and drowsiness.

Drugs like Zyprexa can cost up to $500 per month. Generic versions can cut the cost by up to 80 percent.

FDA approves generic versions of medications after the patent on the original drug expires or has been ruled invalid in court.

Shares of Indianapolis-based Eli Lilly rose 12 cents to $38.19 in afternoon trading.

(AP) ? Turkish families wept in joy and sorrow Monday as a few lucky survivors and many more victims were pulled out of the rubble after a 7.2-magnitude quake leveled over a hundred apartment and office buildings.

One trapped man saved his own life by calling for help on his cell phone, and others survived being buried alive for more than a day.

But as death toll rose to 279 from Sunday's quake in eastern Turkey, dozens of people were still trapped in mounds of broken concrete, twisted steel and other construction debris after buildings in two cities and mud-brick homes in nearby villages pancaked or partially collapsed.

Dozens more were placed in body bags or covered by blankets, laid down in rows so people could search for their missing relatives.

"It's my grandson's wife. She was stuck underneath rubble," said Mehmet Emin Umac.

Worst-hit was Ercis, where about 80 multistory buildings collapsed. The eastern city of 75,000 lies close to the Iranian border in one of Turkey's most earthquake-prone zones.

Grieving families cried outside the Ercis mosque.

"My nephew, his wife and their child, all three dead. May God protect us from this kind of grief," resident Kursat Lap told The Associated Press. "They all came here for a Sunday breakfast and then what happened, happened."

Several other men carried a child's body wrapped in a white cloth as weeping family members followed behind.

Yalcin Akay, meanwhile, was dug out from a collapsed six-story building with a leg injury after he called a police emergency line on his phone and described his location, the state-run Anatolia news agency reported. Three others, including two children, were also rescued from the same building in Ercis 20 hours after the quake struck, officials said.

Two other survivors were trapped for over 27 hours.

Abdurrahman Antakyali, 20, was brought out of a crumbled Internet cafe after an eight-hour long joint rescue effort by Turkish and Azerbaijani teams. His father and brother wept with joy as he emerged, Anatolia reported.

Tugba Altinkaynak, 21, had been at a family lunch with 12 other relatives when the temblor hit. She was rescued but there was no immediate word on the fate of her relatives.

More than 2,000 teams with a dozen sniffer dogs were involved in search-and-rescue and aid efforts, and more often than not they found dead bodies, not survivors. Cranes and other heavy equipment lifted slabs of concrete, allowing residents to dig for the missing with shovels.

Those efforts were hampered by over 200 aftershocks that rocked the area, with one on Monday rising up to 5.0 magnitude.

Aid groups scrambled to set up tents, field hospitals and kitchens to help the thousands left homeless or too afraid to re-enter their homes. Many exhausted residents spent the night outside, lighting fires to keep warm.

"We stayed outdoors all night, I could not sleep at all, my children, especially the little one, was terrified," said Serpil Bilici of her six-year-old daughter, Rabia. "I grabbed her and rushed out when the quake hit, we were all screaming."

The bustling, larger city of Van, about 55 miles (90 kilometers) south of Ercis, also sustained substantial damage, but Interior Minister Idris Naim Sahin said search efforts there were winding down.

Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said the quake left 279 dead and some 1,300 injured. Other officials said 10 victims were students learning about the Quran at a religious school that collapsed. Arinc said search-and-rescue efforts could end as early as Tuesday.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who inspected the area late Sunday, said "close to all" the mud-brick homes in surrounding villages had collapsed in the temblor that also rattled parts of Iran and Armenia.

The terrifying moments of the powerful temblor still haunted many.

Abubekir Acar, 42, was sipping tea with friends as the quake leveled a nearby coffee house.

"We did not understand what was going on, the buildings around us, the coffee house all went down so quickly," he said. "For a while, we could not see anything ? everywhere was covered in dust. Then, we heard screams and pulled out anyone we could reach."

Leaders around the world, including President Barack Obama, conveyed their condolences and offered assistance, but Erdogan said Turkey was able to cope for now. Azerbaijan, Iran and Bulgaria still sent aid, he said.

Among those offering help were Israel, Greece and Armenia, who all have had issues in their relations with Turkey.

The offer from Israel came despite a rift in relations following a 2010 Israeli navy raid on a Gaza-bound aid flotilla that left nine Turks dead. Greece, which has a deep dispute with Turkey over the divided island of Cyprus, also offered to send a special earthquake rescue team.

Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic ties due to tensions over the Ottoman-era mass killings of Armenians and the conflict in the separatist region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Turkey lies in one of the world's most active seismic zones and is crossed by numerous fault lines. In 1999, two earthquakes with a magnitude of more than 7 struck northwestern Turkey, killing about 18,000 people.

Istanbul, the country's largest city with more than 12 million people, lies in northwestern Turkey near a major fault line, and experts say tens of thousands could be killed if a major quake struck there.

BOSTON The addition of ascorbate (vitamin C) or its close relative, erythorbate, and the reduced amount of nitrite added in hot dogs, mandated in 1978, have been accompanied by a steep drop in the death rate from colon cancer, according to data presented at the 10th AACR International Conference on Frontiers in Cancer Prevention Research, held Oct. 22-25, 2011.

However, the incidence rate for colon cancer has apparently not changed much since 1978, according to 2011 data from the SEER Cancer Statistics Review from the National Cancer Institute.

"It was proposed that N-nitroso compounds in hot dogs and other processed meats can cause colon cancer," said Sidney S. Mirvish, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the Eppley Institute for Research in Cancer and Allied Diseases at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha. "We found that the level of total apparent N-nitroso compounds in hot dog links prepared in our laboratory fell as increasing levels of sodium erythorbate were included in the hot dog links."

Mirvish and colleagues discussed the view that colon cancer was induced by components of the apparent nonvolatile N-nitroso compounds that occur in processed (nitrite-preserved) meat. Hence, Mirvish and colleagues investigated the effect of varying the erythorbate level on the N-nitroso compound content of hot dogs.

They found that the current level of erythorbate (500 milligrams per kilogram) added to hot dogs reduces the N-nitroso compounds to 2 nanomoles per gram compared with 180 nanomoles per gram when erythorbate was not used.

"When erythorbate was not added, 80 percent of the apparent N-nitroso compounds were found to be due to nitrosothiols, which are probably harmless, still leaving 40 nanomoles per gram that were attributed to possibly carcinogenic N-nitroso compounds," Mirvish said.

If the level of N-nitroso compounds was an important cause of colon cancer, "the drop in N-nitroso compound content caused by the mandated changes in processed meat should have been accompanied by a drop in the incidence of colon cancer," Mirvish said.

In fact, since the mandated changes were introduced 33 years ago, the death rate for colon cancer has dropped sharply. "This may have been due mostly to earlier detection and better treatment of this disease," Mirvish said.

Mirvish concluded that the role of hot dog-derived N-nitroso compounds in the causation of colon cancer remains unclear.

Edmundo Ros, who took Latin sound to London, dies (AP)

LONDON ? He introduced wartime Britain to the percussive rhythm of the rumba, so capturing the nation's imagination that its young princess chose his songs for her public dancing debut.

Bandleader Edmundo Ros, 100, died peacefully in his sleep, his family said Saturday.

Born in Trinidad to a Venezuelan mother and a Scottish father, Ros's musical career began in the Venezuelan army but took off after he moved to London in 1937. His five-piece Rumba Band was a runaway hit, playing for high society and international royalty.

His music was so popular that then-Princess Elizabeth had her first public dance to the sound of Ros' band in the 1940s. As queen, she would award him the Order of the British Empire for his services to entertainment.

Ros was effectively London's "ambassador for Latin American music," his son Douglas told The Associated Press.

Ros was a prolific artist, making more than 800 recordings over the course of his career. His 1949 number, "The Wedding Samba," sold 3 million copies.

His band was a fixture at Regent Street's Coconut Grove club, which he bought in 1951 and which counted Britain's Princess Margaret, Monaco's Prince Rainier and Sweden's Prince Bertil among its regulars, according to the musician's website.

The club's demanding standards ? ladies wearing broad-brimmed hats or trousers were denied admittance ? kept the clientele exclusive through the 1950s, but the relaxation of Britain's gambling laws in the 1960s began to hit his takings.

Ros sold the club and later retired to the Spanish resort city of Alicante, where he died on Friday night, according to a family statement.

Douglas Ros said a private funeral ceremony would take place in Spain.

Blood-pressure-lowering drug after stroke aids recovery, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 21, 2011) ? A commonly prescribed blood pressure-lowering medication appears to kick start recovery in the unaffected brain hemisphere after a stroke by boosting blood vessel growth, a new University of Georgia study has found.

The discovery, based on a study using rats and published recently in the online journal PLoS ONE, occurred only because the team, led by Susan Fagan, professor of clinical and administrative pharmacy at the UGA College of Pharmacy, struck a new path in stroke research by examining the healthy side of brain after the stroke occurred.

"I'm very excited because I think we can harness the restorative properties of the contralesional hemisphere-the other side of the brain-with drug therapies," Fagan said. "When most researchers study stroke they compare the animal's side of the brain that's damaged to the opposite side, assuming that that side is normal or not affected."

For the study, Fagan and her team induced strokes in two groups of male Wistar rats by blocking a major artery in the brain. A third group of placebo, or sham, animals did not experience strokes so that scientists could compare healthy brain hemispheres across all groups. One group received a single dose of saline solution; the other received a dose of the blood pressure drug candesartan. The placebo group received no treatment.

Animals treated with candesartan displayed higher levels of growth factors that aid with the formation of new blood vessels in the brain, a result that confirmed that of earlier studies from the lab. However, the study revealed a previously unobserved phenomenon: Different types of growth factors dominated different hemispheres in the brain, which suggests that candesartan could have healing properties beyond the area of damage.

Doctors and researchers have sought to settle a long-standing debate over whether elevated blood pressure should be lowered in stroke victims. Lowering blood pressure too soon after a stroke could lessen amounts of critical oxygen to the brain. Fagan cited a large clinical trial conducted earlier this year by Scandinavian researchers who concluded that using candesartan to lower blood pressure early after stroke produced no real benefit. In order to bypass the blood pressure debate, Fagan's lab plans to pursue future research with drugs and doses that provide protection to the brain's blood vessels without lowering blood pressure.

The study also found that animals treated with candesartan had increased levels of a "pro-survival" protein in both brain hemispheres. The protein is responsible for helping neurons in the brain survive insults-like a stroke-and promote longer life. Fagan said the study contributes to a body of literature that finds new potential for drug therapy.

"We tell patients the reason they go to rehab after they've had a stroke is to retrain and make new connections so that they can get function back. Maybe it's because the other hemisphere takes over," Fagan said. "If we could stimulate that with drug therapy and make it even more so, it would help lots of people."
