Based on Gaston LeRoux?s ?Phantom of the Opera? and debuted the same year as Andrew Lloyd Webber?s musical, but never on Broadway, this telling of the infamous tale probes more deeply into who the Phantom was and how he came to be. Young Christine alone and struggling is discovered by the Vicomte singing in the market place, encouraged to audition for the Paris Opera, she is rejected by the new owner and his diva wife, Carlotta and sent to costumes to work her way up. The Phantom hears her and believes it is the voice of his late mother who rejected him for his deformities.
