Guild: Brooks's
Age: 27
Appearance: Victoria is remarkably beautiful, and she knows it. Her dark, wavy hair falls to her upper back, and her brown eyes are fringed with impossibly long lashes. She doesn't quite look British; there's an exotic air to her, although it's hard to put a finger on. She's on the petite side, standing at 5'6, although her hand-to-hand combat skills more than make up for it
Personality: Victoria can be incredibly ruthless, although this side of her is usually masked with over-the-top sweetness.
Other: Not much is known about Victoria, other than that she works- or rather, worked- for Brooks's. A year prior to the events of this RP, she inexplicably disappeared from London after she and Peter Finlay were shot at. She hasn't contacted anyone, and no one has any clue as to her whereabouts.

Name: Nathan (Nate) Bainbridge
Guild: The Underworld
Age: 20
Appearance: Nate has a mop of black, curly hair which he usually keeps under a checkered hat. He's a tad shorter than Peter, but more sturdily built.
Personality: Nate is definitely the most mature member of the Underworld, with the exception of the Guildmaster himself. He's a bit like an older brother to Peter, and he's always having to clean up Peter's messes. He's funny, albeit easily annoyed. He's also a stickler for manners.
Other: He's one of the highest-ranking members of the Underworld due to his skills as a con man. He and Peter often work together for missions; he does the espionage, and Peter fires bullets when necessary.

Guild: Machiavelli
Age: 52
Appearance: Kallen is a man of healthy appearance, his skin only minimally wrinkled and his brown hair, which has taken on a silver tint, is mostly in tact despite a balding top of the head. He has kind brown eyes and smile. He stands at a tall 6?2??, though when slouching he can appear up to four inches shorter.
Personality: Due to his age, Kallen doesn?t exactly have much of an interesting personality. He?s blunt, intelligent, and gets the work that needs to be done finished ahead of time. He is a great guy at heart, someone who cares deeply for others, and generally values human life.
Other: He is extremely protective over Amaryllis, though they seem to have more of an argumentative relationship than anything. He has been a member of Machiavelli ever since it formed and has personal relations with the Boss.

Name: Joseph Finn
Guild: Machiavelli
Age: 21
Appearance: Joseph isn?t exactly the most attractive guy out there. His skin is blemished and generally sun burnt, which contrasts greatly against his bright blonde hair, which is cut in a shaggy, curly manner. He stands at 5?8?? with a rather skinny, non-athletic build. His only good feature seems to be his bright green eyes.
Personality: You know that guy that nobody takes seriously? Yeah, that would be Joseph. He?s extremely childish and doesn?t really take anything seriously. Because of his unfortunately weak body type, he enjoys working under Kallen as an information gatherer.
Other: He joined Machiavelli in order to pursue a relationship with Amara, but is now more of a younger brother to her, despite his age. He also looks up to Kallen as a mentor and role model.

Name: Marius Debrave
Guild: Underwood
Age: 23
Appearance: Marius is, all in all, an extremely attractive fellow. Short black hair frames a strong-boned face: high cheek bones, strong brow bones, and a great chin line. A set of grey-blue eyes sits back in a tanned complexion. He stands at 6?1?? and has a fairly athletic build that features broad shoulders and developed muscles.
Personality: At first glance, Marius is the perfect guy: good-looking, charming, and full of chivalry. He seems to be able to say exactly what you want to hear and how you want to hear it in order to get what he wants. He has undying loyalty to his guild, but his loyalty seems to fade when it comes to relationships with others.
Other: He moved from Scotland with Amaryllis; they?ve been close since childhood. They have an off and on romantic relationship. He lives in an apartment just beside her home, though most of the time they hang out in his apartment. Though he knows that Amara is a member of Machiavelli, she is completely unaware that he is a member of Underwood and he?d like to keep it that way since he is feeding Underwood information he manages to get off of her.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? A year after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1996, the New Jersey Devils are going back to the Stanley Cup finals, thanks to a rookie, a 40-year-old goaltender and a coach who'd never been to the postseason in the NHL.

How's that for a turnaround?

Adam Henrique scored off a wild scramble in front at 1:03 into overtime and the Devils defeated the rival New York Rangers, 3-2, in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals to advance to their first Stanley Cup finals since 2003.

The Devils will face the Los Angeles Kings for the Cup in a series that will start on Wednesday here.

This series win came against the Devils' most intense rival, and it was that much sweeter.

"That one was like Christmas," said Henrique, who also scored the series winner as Devils' first-round win over Florida.

It also was needed. The Devils' blew a 2-0 first-period lead and didn't want to head back to New York for a Game 7 on Sunday.

"It didn't matter how it got to overtime, we were in a good position," Devils captain Zach Parise said. "We were at home. We just needed one shot."

Actually, the Devils needed four shots to win the game.

Henrique's winner came after Henrik Lundqvist stopped Ilya Kovalchuk twice and Alexei Ponikarovsky. The last shot lay in the crease and Henrique tapped it home.

Ryan Carter and Kovalchuk also scored for the Devils, whose biggest move this year was hiring Peter DeBoer as coach. He was fired by Florida after missing the playoffs in his three seasons. In his first postseason, he is hoping to lead New Jersey to its fourth Cup.

Ruslan Fedotenko and Ryan Callahan tallied for top-seeded New York, which had a good flurry just before New Jersey scored.

Henrique, who is nominated for the Calder Trophy ? given to the NHL's top rookie ? skated away from the crease and jumped against the end boards in the corner as his teammates hopped off the bench and mobbed him.

The six Rangers on the ice just stayed down in disbelief and frustration. This was very much like Game 5, which the Devils won 5-3. New York carried the play after the first period and had a 35-29 edge in shots.

But when it came time for a game-deciding play to be made, it was a Devil who made it.

"When they scored, it was such an empty feeling," said Lundqvist, who said the puck took a weird bounce on the final play. "It is shocking."

Henrique overcame injury to score this one. He seemed to take a stick from Brian Boyle in the groin area late in the third and had to leave the ice.

He felt no pain after the game winner.

All the Rangers could do was bow their heads and then line up for the traditional handshake after losing to their cross-rival rivals in a series that was close.

Martin Brodeur, 40, kept the Devils alive in the third. He stopped a power-play shot by Brad Richards, made a save on Artem Anisimov between the circles and used his stick to deflect a pass from the boards by Carl Hagelin in the final minute just before it got to Marian Gaborik on the edge of the crease.

"You could tell he was in the zone. He led us," Parise said. "He made some big saves tonight."

Lundqvist's best stop in the third was on Dainius Zubrus on a shot from behind the circles.

Facing elimination and down 2-0 after 20 minutes, the Rangers found their game in the second period and tied the game at 2-all on goals by Fedotenko and Callahan in a roughly four-minute span.

Defenseman Ryan McDonagh, who assisted on both goals, made the big play to get New York back in the game. He collected the puck above the left circle, skated around the net and tried a wrap around. The shot didn't go on goal but it turned out to be a perfect pass to Fedotenko who a tap-in into an open net at 9:47.

Callahan, who had a goal go off his leg in the Devils' 5-3 win on Wednesday, tied the game at 13:41 when Dan Girardi's shot from the right point deflected off his leg into the open lower corner of the net. Pick of the Week: The Family Tree

?

Relationships can be amazingly enriching and amazingly irritable experiences, yet everybody needs them in order to live a fulfilling modern life. At the moment my relationships remind me of my basil plant. I am that main stem and the branches represent different forms of relationships all spearheaded by one individual. Each branch grows out into several fingers of leaves and these leaves represent the people who are connected to me through the branch.

My basil tree has been looking quite frail of late. It seems no matter how often I water the soil it looks arid and dead. The topsoil covered by decaying leaves that have fallen from grace. The bright green colour seems washed out, and some of the leaves have started to turn brown. It is spreading; like a virus, and at the moment those leaves are clinging on for dear life.

When you take a decision to transform your life you will notice a change in your relationships. This transformation could be anything from the end of an addiction to a divorce or change of career. The first thing you will notice is the discolouration of the leaves. A dirty brown stain will slowly replace the fresh green hue. This is your relationship deteriorating. For a long while you will try to fight against the transformation. You may remember the good times with fondness and try desperately to stay connecting with your former friend or loved one. You try to keep the relationship fresh by sharing your new wonderful experiences with them, but the stain keeps spreading. You can?t understand why these people are not listening to what you have to say. Even worse, you know they are trying to divert the conversation. They never ask how you are or what you are doing. Each conversation turns into a battle with the first person to open their mouths deemed the victor.

After a short while the brown stain has enveloped the entire leaf. If you tenderly caress the leaf it will start to crumble and fall. The leaf is dead. The relationship is dead. You will find it difficult to give a dead leaf mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. As you look at the soil slowly eat away at the deadness you wonder what went wrong? It is human nature to blame yourself for the death of a relationship. Your automatic pilot, the always present voice that resides in your head will start asking the questions: what did I do wrong? Am I self-righteous? Did I try to hard to push my changes onto them? Have I become an upstart? Do I think I am a better than?

Sometimes the leaves die because the branch is cut. When this happens it can be devastating. A good example is a divorce. Your wife is the solid branch that has morphed itself onto your stem for years. When you look you don?t see a stem and a branch but one unit called a tree. You are one. You are soul mates. Then one or the other starts to transform and the staining process ensues. This time the entire branch weakens and eventually falls to the ground and it brings 5 maybe 10 leaves crashing down with it. These leaves represent the family members that you adopted as your own. Your in-laws you affectionately referred to as mum, dad, sister and brother. These poor leaves did nothing wrong. They didn?t ask for this. The loss of love. The loss of life. It wasn?t their want, their desire.

Desolation and isolation. Dry dirt, weak stems, bowing branches and translucent leaves. When you look at that picture it can be easy to believe that transformation is wrong. There goes that voice again: why did I choose this? Can I go back? Life was so much simpler back then? What am I doing? Why am I hurting everyone? You wake up in the morning and your decisions are prodding you in the frontal lobe with a rusty pin. You get into an argument with yourself. You defend your actions. You must be right? You cannot go back? Why is this happening? Why is my tree dying?

When all may seem lost, remember this. Relationships survive and flourish with input from both parties. They die when one or both members of the team decide to throw the crimson soaked towel into the ring. If your loved ones want to be green and strong they will make sure that they stay that way. In a way the brown crispiness is a choice. They are choosing to lie in the dirt instead of a life flapping in the breeze. They don?t choose life ? they chose death. This is when you both realise that the relationship has run its course. It has ended for a reason and it is time to move on. In laws may want to speak to you, but choose not to out of respect of those you have hurt. I say let this run its course. Allow them to be there for their loved ones. Allow them to strengthen their own branches and protect their own trees. It is sad but if it was meant to be it would be. If you can look in the mirror and not turn away in disgust then you know you have done all you can.

This week a wonderful thing happened to me. Somebody has decided to pour some water into my basil tree. Not just any water, but the water of life. As the decaying branches and leaves are pulled into the ground by the water of life, my stem grows stronger. The roots push life upwards and a green light emerges. New branches have started to grow out of the knot of the old. These branches are young but you can already feel the strength and see the colour reflect in your eyes. Small leaves have already started to sprout along the stem. There is a long way to go but for now they are filled with new experiences, fresh things to discuss and new love to wallow in. Over time your tree will be as it once was and your transformation will be complete. Maybe some of the older leaves may reappear over time, but you will never see the branches again. Instead they are now memories and you should spend time viewing them from time to time, because they happened and when they did you took love, strength and encouragement out of them. That old tree made you who you are today. It is all part of the metamorphosis of life.

Lockerbie convict Abdelbaset Ali al-Megrahi buried after dying at ...

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi has been buried in the town of Janzur, west of the Libyan capital Tripoli. He was the only individual convicted in association with the Lockerbie bombing of 1988. He died at his residence Sunday, aged 60.

The bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 from London to New York resulted in 270 fatalities, including all 259 of the airplane?s occupants and eleven individuals on the ground. 189 of those who died in the incident were US citizens. The death toll for this terrorist incident is larger than that for any other which has occurred in the United Kingdom thus far.

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi was placed on trial in May 2000 in the Netherlands alongside Al Amin Khalifah Fhimah. While Fhimah was found not guilty on all charges placed against him, al-Megrahi was found guilty of his and sentenced to at least 27 years imprisonment. Having been initially placed in HM Prison Barlinnie, al-Megrahi was transferred to Greenock in 2005.

In 2002, an appeal against his conviction was unsuccessful. Five years later, senior judges in Scotland were to review his case, but he dropped the appeal. Due to suffering from prostate cancer, he was granted a compassionate release from Scottish prison two days later.

Current UK Prime Minister David Cameron commented on his belief that al-Megrahi ?should never have been released from prison? and said his death was an occasion ?to remember the 270 people who lost their lives in what was an appalling terrorist act?. According to Alex Salmond, First Minister of Scotland, the investigation into the Lockerbie bombing is ongoing. Salmond also called for remembrance of those killed. Prosecutors, he said, had always thought there were others besides al-Megrahi involved in the attack.

US citizen Susan Cohen, the mother of one of those killed in the Lockerbie bombing, thought of al-Megrahi as ?a mass murderer? who ?deserved to die?, adding to CNN: ?I feel no pity around him. He got to die with his family around him. My daughter [Theodora], at age 20, died a brutal, horrible death?. However, UK citizen Jim Swire, father of another victim of the bombing, believes al-Megrahi was not guilty. He described al-Megrahi?s death as ?a sad time?, telling the BBC he was ?satisfied for some years that this man was nothing to do with the murder of my daughter?.

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi has consistently denied responsibility for the attack. In his final recorded interview in December 2011, he insisted he was ?an innocent man? who was ?about to die and I ask now to be left in peace with my family.? His brother Mohammed al-Megrahi claimed ?[t]here never was exact proof? and said al-Megrahi?s ?pain is over now ? he is with God?.

Neuron-nourishing cells appear to retaliate in Alzheimer's

ScienceDaily (May 22, 2012) ? When brain cells start oozing too much of the amyloid protein that is the hallmark of Alzheimer's disease, the astrocytes that normally nourish and protect them deliver a suicide package instead, researchers report.

Amyloid is excreted by all neurons, but rates increase with aging and dramatically accelerate in Alzheimer's. Astrocytes, which deliver blood, oxygen and nutrients to neurons in addition to hauling off some of their garbage, get activated and inflamed by excessive amyloid.

Now researchers have shown another way astrocytes respond is by packaging the lipid ceramide with the protein PAR-4, which independently can do damage but together are a more "deadly duo," said Dr. Erhard Bieberich, biochemist at the Medical College of Georgia at Georgia Health Sciences University.

"If the neuron makes something toxic and dumps it at your door, what would you do?" said Bieberich, corresponding author of the study published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. "You would probably do something to defend yourself."

The researchers hypothesize that this lipid-coated package ultimately kills them both, which could help explain the brain-cell death and shrinkage that occurs in Alzheimer's. "If the astrocytes die, the neurons die," Bieberich said, noting studies suggest that excess amyloid alone does not kill brain cells. "There must be a secondary process toxifying the amyloid; otherwise the neuron would self-intoxicate before it made a big plaque," he said. "The neuron would die first."

One of many avenues for future pursuit include whether a ceramide antibody could be a viable Alzheimer's treatment. In the researchers' studies of brain cells of humans with Alzheimer's as well as an animal model of the disease, antibodies to ceramide and Par-4 prevented astrocytes' amyloid-induced death.

Ceramide and Par-4 get packaged in lipid-coated vesicles called exosomes; all cells secrete thousands of these vesicles but scientists are only beginning to understand their normal function. When exosomes become deadly, they are called apoxosomes.

Ceramide and Par-4 are typically not in a vesicle, rather in two distinct parts of a cell. Ceramide appears to take the lead in bringing the two together when confronted with amyloid. Bieberich and colleagues at the University of Georgia reported in 2003 that the deadly duo helps eliminate duplicate brain cells that occur early in brain development when their survival could result in a malformed brain. They suspected then that the duo might also have a role in Alzheimer's.

Risk factors for Alzheimer's include aging, family history and genetics, according to the Alzheimer's Association. Increasing evidence suggests that Alzheimer's also shares many of the same risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high cholesterol, high blood pressure and inactivity.

Drs. Guanghu Wang, research scientist, and Michael Dinkins, postdoctoral fellow, are co-first authors on the study funded by the National Institutes of Health.

Buffett's firm buys 10M share stake in GM

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Warren Buffett's company is apparently bullish on the U.S. auto industry.

His company, Berkshire Hathaway Inc. took a new 10 million-share stake in General Motors Co. in the first quarter. The investment comes as the Detroit automaker continues to rebound from bankruptcy three years ago. It posted a first-quarter net income of $1 billion, fueled by U.S. vehicle sales.

Buffett drives a GM-made Cadillac DTS sedan, so the investment could be a further sign of his preference among U.S. automakers. Berkshire is not invested in Ford Motor Co. or Chrysler, which is majority owned by Fiat SpA. But the purchase of the GM stake, worth about $214 million as of Tuesday, could also have been made by one of Berkshire's other investment managers.

Omaha-based Berkshire also revealed in a regulatory filing Tuesday that it boosted its stake in Wal-Mart by almost 8 million shares to 46.7 million shares.

The first-quarter move to expand Berkshire's stake in Wal-Mart came before The New York Times published a report detailing allegations that Wal-Mart executives used bribes to speed the retailer's expansion in Mexico.

Buffett told Berkshire shareholders earlier this month, however, that the scandal didn't change his view on Wal-Mart's value or its earning power.

Berkshire officials don't typically comment on the quarterly investment reports, and they did not respond to a message on Tuesday about the latest update.

The documents Berkshire filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission also don't reveal everything Buffett and the company's two new investment managers were buying and selling in the first quarter. That's because regulators allow them to omit some of the company's holdings from the report.

Berkshire tweaked a number of positions in its $75.3 billion portfolio during the first three months of 2012. It also added a stake of 1.6 million Viacom shares, which was the only new holding reported besides GM.

It also boosted its investments in DirecTV, Liberty Media, DaVita Inc. and the Bank of New York Mellon.

Berkshire reduced its holdings in Intel Corp., Kraft Foods, Dollar General, Procter & Gamble and Verisk Analytics.

The IBM stake that Berkshire first reported last fall grew to 64.4 million shares by the end of March from 63.9 million in December.

Initially, the IBM investment surprised many because Buffett had long refused to invest in technology companies because it's too hard to predict which one will prosper in the long run. But Buffett said in November that IBM had become more of a service company with long-lasting customers who are reluctant to change.

Buffett makes most of the investment decisions at Berkshire, but Tuesday's filing didn't differentiate between choices he made and ones made by the company's other investment managers, Todd Combs and Ted Weschler.

Buffett has said he doesn't typically make investments worth less than $300 million, so many of the moves reported Tuesday are likely the work of Combs or Weschler.

Buffett has praised both Combs and Weschler and said the two men are managing $2.75 billion each, while Buffett oversees the remaining roughly $150 billion.

Combs started at Berkshire last year, so he is further along in building his portfolio. Weschler started early this year.

Berkshire's investments are closely watched in the market because of Buffett's successful record.

Berkshire occasionally receives permission from the SEC to delay disclosing some stock purchases to prevent others who follow Buffett's moves from driving up the price of those stocks before Berkshire completes its purchases. Berkshire then discloses the purchases or sales in a subsequent quarter and issues amended reports for previous quarters.

The SEC says it grants such confidentiality to investment managers only when they can show they would be harmed substantially by immediate disclosure.

Besides investments, Berkshire owns roughly 80 subsidiaries, including clothing, furniture and jewelry firms, but its insurance and utility businesses typically account for more than half of the company's net income. Other major investments include Coca-Cola Co.
