Three Common Sleep Issues Experienced by Pregnant Women ...

A woman?s body undergoes many amazing changes when she becomes pregnant and many of those are unexpected at first. Many women are shocked to learn of the many different and uncomfortable side-effects of going through pregnancy. Many people joke about not sleeping when the child is born, but pregnancy brings its own host of sleeping problems. Obviously women expect to be inconvenienced by trying to sleep with an expanding belly, but there can be many other unexpected nighttime issues.

Leg cramps at night: Many women suffer from unexpected bedtime leg muscle cramping. Leg muscle cramps may strike at any time during the pregnancy, but they are most common in the third trimester. Changes in nutritional needs, dehydration and the rapid weight gain of becoming pregnant can often be reasons for charley horses. There are a number of preventative measures for calf cramps, but be sure to check with your primary care professional before using them.

Constipation issues: The intestines and other bodily organs are being squeezed together to make room for the expanding baby and that pressure commonly affects the digestive organs the most. Pregnant women can not always be able to get much relief from heartburn and constipation issues because some drugs designed to alleviate these symptoms are not pregnancy safe. It is no surprise that many women should have issues with digestion during pregnancy.

Frequent urination problems: Many expecting women suffer through one or more random nocturnal bedwetting episodes during their pregnancy. Nearly all expecting women experience an increased need to urinate much more frequently than they are used to. Pressure against the urinary system and increased pressure on the kidneys may cause some women to urinate three to six times a night.

Expecting women should be forewarned about sleep issues by their physicians in advance. Some doctors advise expectant women to sleep with pillows around them for comfort and to sleep on their left side to help alleviate some of these sleep issues. Different sleep issues will come and go during the length of a pregnancy, and not all women suffer from the same sleep challenges.
