Parenting Adolescents and the Psychology of Similarity | Psychology ...

In their children, parents see reflections of themselves. In their parents, children see models for themselves. To the degree that children appear to be like their parents, and parents appear how children want to be, a kind of harmony based on similarity can rule.

?We want our child to share our interests, goals, and values,? explain the parents, ?and we let him know how it pleases us when he does.? ?I want to do the same as my parents,? explains the young child, ?because we love it when I?m acting just like them.? In human relationships, when it comes to attraction and compatibility, perceived similarity can count for a lot. We tend to feel closer to others who seem like us. We tend to like those who believe and behave like us. We tend to assume other kinds of positive commonality from apparent similarities. We even tend to treat strangers better who appear similar to us. And we are often drawn to those people who we wish to be like.

Thus the psychology of similarity plays out between parents and child, a kind of matching game that can a matter a lot, particularly when a match cannot be made or is unmade ? when sense of difference creates a sense of being unlike, when sense of being unlike creates a sense of being less liked, when feeling less alike and liked reduces the desire to associate and take?pleasure?from that connection.

Sometimes a match cannot be made. For example, the second child (unlike the first who got first crack at being similar to parents) is differently inclined or constituted than parents -- perhaps he is not physically active like them, perhaps not emotionally upbeat like them, perhaps not socially outgoing like them, perhaps not academically interested like them, perhaps not achievement motivated like them. Sensing something ?wrong? with these differences, parents may try to change the child to fit their model and in doing so send a message of intolerance: ?you are not acceptable the way you are; you need to become more like us to be okay.? Instead, they must ask for help understanding what is unfamiliar and learn?to value this family diversity in order to stay lovingly connected as their relationship grows.

If the child cannot or will not bend to parental wishes and comply with their desire for similarity, parental disapproval and disappointment may follow, the child sadly or madly concluding: ?I could never measure up to be the way my parents wanted!? Hopefully, she will be able to make a healthy distinction at this point for her own sake: ?the fault wasn?t me for failing to meet their expectations; it was their failure for not building expectations that understood and were accepting of me.?

Parents should beware: it?s easy to expect similarity to them from their children; it?s easy to favor similarity to them among their children; it?s easy for their desire for similarity to suppress the expression or growth of authentic individuality in their children; it?s easy to encourage, even insist on, a child?s similarity to them where there is no natural basis there. It?s important that parents don?t allow their need for similarity to get in the way of their child?s need for acceptance. They must learn to bridge human differences with interest to communicate acceptance the adolescent needs.

This brings to mind the ?Gestalt Prayer? by Fritz Perls (?Gestalt Therapy Verbatim,? 1969):

?I do my thing and you do your thing.

I am not in this world to live up to your expectations,

And you are not in this world to live up to mine.

You are you, and I am I,

And if by chance we find each other, it?s beautiful.

If not, it can?t be helped.?

When a similarity match is unmade, as to some degree often happens with the onset of adolescence, everybody suffers a loss: the parents no longer having a child who wants to imitate them for closeness sake, and the child no longer having parents as the model they want to imitate. Adolescence itself is the common culprit here as the child separates and asserts differentness from how she was a child, from how parents are, and from how they want her to be, all as part of the process of asserting his own individual and independent way.

For example, finding similarity to her mom offensive, the 14-year-old daughter defiantly turns on the woman and declares: ?I?m not you, I?m not like you, I don?t want to be you, and I?m not going to become how you want me to be! I?m going to be me!? The similarity that kept them so close in childhood, best friends of a kind, to some degree ruptures as adolescence starts growing them apart, creating a necessary loss for both. Now the mom has to endure more friction and hang in there with her daughter so the adolescent does not feel that loss of similarity has resulted in any loss of love.

The psychology of similarity is complicated because not only can similarity confer a sense of familiarity, commonality, comfort, and closeness, it can also create clashes and cause conflicts. For example, consider what happens when, in the dad?s words: ?My high school daughter and I are too alike.? What does he mean? ?We?re both high strung, easily stressed, on edge a lot, too sensitive for our own good, and too quick off the trigger when we get upset, sometimes popping off and saying what we wish we hadn?t but can?t take back now. My wife is great with our daughter because she?s low key and calm and can listen when our daughter is blowing up a storm. Not like me. Unless I catch myself, I immediately start storming back, and we go at each other gale force!?

This is when I talk to the dad about exploiting the similarity connection with his daughter to positive effect. ?Since you both seem to share a lot of human nature, you can use that similarity to instructional effect. Tell her how you?ve learned to manage high sensitivity and emotional reactivity over the years, the strategies for self-restraint that you?ve developed, and then for the sake of your present and her future practice not popping off with her when she?s intense. From your emotionally sober example maybe she can learn to moderate herself.?

One family example that illustrates how extreme psychological similarity can create extreme intimacy?is the case of adolescent identical twins. Sharing the same genes, they often develop a closeness with each other that is not only greater than with anyone else in the family, but to a degree can emotionally exclude others in the family as well. They have a special knowing of each other and need for each other to complete each other, to some degree sharing the same personality, even communicating in a kind of shorthand or special language that other family members do not understand. And, should they eventually marry, their partners are going to have to accept and value the deep bonding that the twins will always have with each other from the extreme psychological similarity they share.

Finally, a reader of my earlier blog about Parental Favorism testified to how destructive the psychology of similarity can become. "My own experience has taught me that the favoured child is generally the one most akin to the parent responsible for the favouring. The two will share personality traits, likes and dislikes, hobbies and interests. They may also demonstrate a similarity in behaviour and mannerisms, or in physical appearance and dress sense. Sometimes, the simple fact of their being the same gender will be enough to secure favouritism.

"The parent responsible for such favouritism may act consciously or unconsciously. However, what seems to lead to the favouritism is that they identified in the favourite child traits or interests that they themselves possess. Clearly, they will view such things as desirable attributes, and thus will encourage, and bond with the child who displays them.

"Less favoured children will often be ones who do not 'gel' with the parent in this way. They will have traits, personalities or attributes that are unlike those of the parent; these will be viewed in a negative light, as less desirable and not to be encouraged. The parents may see a child who is dissimilar to them as a challenge, or even a threat. They may view such individuality as unexpected, or inexplicable. They may even label it as deliberate, rebellious, or as an affront to their authority.

Microsoft Surface Pro is a Swiss Army Knife in disguise

For those used to cutting the rope or drawing "something", Microsoft Surface Pro is not going to be the tablet for you. Microsoft?s latest attempt to conquer the business end of the tablet market has left many puzzled as to why the software giant has priced a basically untested product right at the $900 mark, when the latest generation iPad starts at $499. They assume, perhaps understandably, that Surface Pro competes with Apple's pride and joy, yet they are wrong. Surface Pro is actually a miniaturized laptop trapped inside a tablet's shell.

For professionals and power users it doesn?t take long to realize that Surface Pro is as far away as possible from a basic consumer-oriented tablet. The dead giveaway is the processor and graphics card combination -- a third generation Core i5 CPU paired with an HD Graphics 4000 GPU, both made by Intel. Together they really shout from the top of their silicons: "We really come from PC technology!" The naysayers should therefore understand where Microsoft is actually going with Surface Pro -- towards professionals and power users, not the Cut The Rope or Draw Something crowd (although it can be used for that too).

The "Surface Pro is doomed" phrase was used, and will still be used, on plenty of occasions when price is added into the equation. Starting at $899 the tablet is not cheap -- no one can really argue that when mobile computing can be had for less than $199. The Google Nexus 7 is a good example at the other end of the scale, yet just like with the iPad that is an apples to pineapples comparison. They all share the same basic principles (hence the "apples" in both names) but from there on each goes its separate way.

The price, however, is not really an issue, as my colleague Joe Wilcox pointed out -- "Seven out of 10 will buy Surface Pro". Whoa, something's really, really, really wrong with that finding. Isn't it? Actually no, because there is real value added into a rather boldly priced proposition. When doing the math and actually comparing Surface Pro to an equivalent laptop of the same prowess all the price tag complaints slowly fade far away into the background. Read the Microsoft Surface Pro is NOT overpriced article for an in-depth comparison between Surface Pro and Apple MacBook Air, from the pricing perspective.

As someone who actually owns a business-grade laptop that is used almost every single day for professional use, ranging from running Ubuntu inside a virtual machine to creating AutoCAD drafts or generating structural models, I view Surface Pro as being worth every single penny. Its range of capabilities is practically limited only by the battery life, outside the power grid. But only by taking a look at what Surface Pro can actually do will the naysayers then understand it.

The fact is, even Microsoft admits that its own branded device is a "64-bit tablet PC". That means that Surface Pro basically ships with Windows 8 Pro (hence the "Pro" in the name) in 64-bit trim, allowing the tablet to run practically any 32-bit and 64-bit software on the market, that?s designed to work on Microsoft's latest consumer operating system. Coupled with the 4GB of RAM, Surface Pro can, for instance, handle Ubuntu 12.10 64 bit inside Oracle VirtualBox.

Yes, virtualization is not a problem and that's on a tablet that can also render full HD movies thanks to a large 1920 by 1080 resolution, play the latest tunes and games from the Windows Store and other sources as well. Want to give Call of Duty and Half-Life a go and listen to your favorite music in Winamp? You can do that and plenty more.

In the consumer tablet world, to some extent at least, apps have taken over from computer applications/programs and likely those users who embraced them don?t place much importance on running legacy ones -- it's an improperly used term, yet it clarifies the difference between Windows Store-compatible apps and normal ones (like for Windows 7). However, as usually happens, there is always a market segment that is forgotten by consumer-oriented reports -- users who place a great deal of value on running professional-grade applications.

Surface Pro is designed to simply fill that void, as the tablet sports Windows 8 Pro, a fully-fledged desktop operating system. Professionals can run Adobe Photoshop, Microsoft Office or VMware Workstation for instance. Surface Pro simply provides access to the immense Windows ecosystem, a feature that not many tablets can tout.

The USB 3.0 port may not mean much today for the average consumer who takes advantage of cloud storage or transfers files via Wi-Fi, but for professionals it also means that an external HDD can be connected; a plain and simple mouse attached. Sure, it's rather cool to swipe about, but a mouse can get the job done much quicker inside larger spreadsheets and the higher connectivity speeds of USB 3.0 also means that transfers do not have to happen in a lifetime (USB 3.0 can theoretically handle speeds of up to 5 Gbps, while USB 2.0 is limited to 480 Mbps). That's covering all possible bases. The iPad can't do that, but that?s fine because the iPad isn?t designed to function as such.

My colleague Tim Conneally showcased the advantages of using a stylus on the Samsung Galaxy Note II and as someone used to drawing with a mouse inside AutoCAD I can entirely relate to how using a tiny "pen" can ease the process on a tablet. Professionals are normal human beings who adapt with the times, yet some jobs do require the same tools now as they did 10 years ago. The stylus on the Surface Pro basically eases the transition between a laptop or fully fledged computer, paired with a mouse, to a tablet. Not many people will think of it this way because it requires a narrower focus, which is practically unusual when only dealing with consumer-oriented devices.

There are however some issues that need to be pointed out. Surface Pro may have a 48W battery but even Microsoft admits that its battery life won?t break any records. And while the tablet may feature an USB 3.0 port there is just a single one on board, not two or three for extended connectivity options. Buyers are forced to choose what they want to physically attach and for how long they can spend disconnected from the power grid. And, unlike Surface with Windows RT, Surface Pro cannot be purchased as a tablet and keyboard combo. For those who want Microsoft's keyboard options, the price goes up by more than $100. Pricey, but is it worth it?

Surface Pro buyers will more than likely wish to purchase an accompanying keyboard and, seeing as the tablet offers USB and Bluetooth 4.0 connectivity alongside the standard Touch Cover and Type Cover compatibility, users will have a wide array of options to choose from. The built-in kickstand poses no issue for those who wish to go down the wireless path.

A Bluetooth keyboard paired with a DisplayPort-compatible TV and an attached mouse turns Surface Pro from a laptop trapped inside a tablet's shell into an actual boardroom/desk-friendly device. Instead of purchasing a plain desktop PC or a less than versatile laptop, one could easily just get Microsoft's tablet and enjoy it everywhere. Microsoft Surface Pro really is a Swiss Army Knife in disguise.

The 10 Best iOS And Android Games Of 2012

Editor's note:?Stephen Danos is the associate editor for the mobile app discovery site Appolicious.?Follow him on Twitter @sdanos.

This year's most captivating games either pushed the envelope with state-of-the-art graphics and rich narratives or perfected already proven formulas for touch-based devices. The best titles also bridged the gap between casual and hardcore gamers.

Some developers (Phosphor Games and Vivid Games, most notably) went for realistic 3D graphics that often packed in hours of story-based gameplay similar to console titles. Others like Rovio and RocketCat Games, stuck to churning out repetitive, casual gaming experiences that kept us fully engaged. All being equal, these disparate approaches produced truly riveting games that took full advantage of the features and processing capabilities of mobile devices.

The developers with games in this list should be very proud of their creations. Despite certain genres being oversaturated (such as pick up and play or side-scrolling games) and the unpopular monetization trend of forcing customers to pay for content through in-app purchases, these geniuses managed to make games that are infinitely addictive and rewarding. The picks listed below were curated by Appolicious advisors (most notably gaming guru Andrew Koziara) and members of our user community.

We also have a separate list of the best iOS and Android apps of 2012.

horn.pngHorn (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android $6.99) The character Horn is a young blacksmith's apprentice who must defeat giant monsters who are villagers transformed by a horrible curse. Using a melee combat system similar to Infinity Blade, but with major gameplay enhancements like using a crossbow and puzzle-solving, the developers on the Phosphor Games team were truly pensive during Horn's development. Horn is the best game of 2012 because it combines an imaginative narrative with top-of-the-line graphics, proving that mobile games with endearing stories can be beautiful despite the limitations of iOS devices. Horn appeals to gamers young and old, and is a great title that will enlighten you as to just what your smartphone or tablet is capable of handling. We should note that Horn does suffer a bit on earlier generation Android devices and operating systems.

arcsquadron.pngARC Squadron (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad free limited time only) ARC Squadron is a rail shooter game that combines the retro experience of playing an old Nintendo 64 console game with state-of-the-art graphics geared specifically to touchscreen devices. Powered by the Unreal Engine 3 development toolkit, ARC Squadron has players try their hands (and fingers) in intergalactic warfare. Each area of the galaxy involves a handful of levels with bonus challenge levels along the way, culminating in an epic boss fight. ARC Squadron is very arcade in nature, as scores in each level directly translate into currency that lets players upgrade and purchase new ships, weapons, and skins. Somehow ARC Squadron manages to ape the gameplay of classic console titles like Star Fox 64, yet feel fresh in a mobile media environment.

angrybirdsstarwars.pngAngry Birds Star Wars (iPhone, iPod touch 99 cents, iPad $2.99, Android smartphones free, Android tablets $2.99) Star Wars merchandising, both before and after the Disney acquisition, has never felt so good. The newest edition to the Angry Birds family is just plain awesome. Old birds are re-dressed as Luke, Han, Obi-Wan, Chewie, and the rest. The birds also get all new powers, including shooting blasters and swinging light sabers. The game is a brilliant mix of the old school Angry Birds mechanics and the gravity mechanics of Angry Birds Space (also a worthy addition to any "best of 2012" list). Add all the Star Wars references and visuals (from the original trilogy, only) and you have a game that is out of this world.

raymanjunglerun.pngRayman Jungle Run (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Android $2.99) Apple named this?Ubisoft title the 2012 game of the year, and for good reason. Many of us were totally praising this game before it was cool. Based on the utterly brilliant Rayman: Origins (a console-based platformer to rival even Mario), this auto-scrolling runner manages to keep all the creativity and bizarre charm of its predecessor, but with bite-sized levels and half of the controls removed. Seriously though, Ubisoft stripped Origins' down to its core for this simple game, but it's just as fun and the visuals are just as jaw-droppingly crisp and vibrant as ever. It's a bit more challenging than other runners, but do not skip this one.

letterpresswordgame.pngLetterPress Word Game (iPhone, iPad free) Move over, Words With Friends. Developed by atebits, Letterpress is an inventive multiplayer word game that mixes the strategies of Boggle and Chess. The virtual board of this game is covered in red and blue tiles, each representing you or your opponent. The objective is pretty basic: change as many tiles as possible to match your color while spelling words. Games end when tiles run out. It helps to both have a high letter count and know when to play defensively, blocking off letters by placing your tiles around them. LetterPress supports asynchronous multiplayer through Game Center, so you can face off against as many players as you desire from all over the world at the same time.

beatsneakbandit.pngBeat Sneak Bandit (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad $2.99) Beat Sneak Bandit elegantly combines rhythm games (in which players tap along to the beat of the music playing in the game), with puzzle gameplay and stealth action. You'll need to tap to the beat to make the Beat Sneak Bandit character take his sneaky steps, and time your way through the game's obstacles and traps. The game is really a clever take on touchscreen games, has a great art style and musical selection, and is easy to play while challenging to master.

punchquest.pngPunch Quest (iPhone, iPod touch, iPad) (Free) Punch Quest is an impressive side-scrolling, endless running game where the main objective is to meet monstrous obstacles head-on with a barrage of uppercuts and jabs. Enemies include feeble skeletons, shield-wielding orcs, fire-breathing imps, and spellcasting wraiths. During the game your fully-customizable protagonist collects coins called "punchos" for buying skills, super moves, boosts, and upgrades. There are even bonus levels where your warrior rides a dinosaur that shoots lasers out of its mouth or transforms into a cartwheeling gnome! RocketCat Games, one of the most reliably talented and awesome developers in the iOS gaming space, are is responsible for the Hook Champ games and the excellent Mage Gauntlet.

realboxing.pngReal Boxing?(iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, iPad mini) $4.99 Real Boxing, developed by Vivid Games, delivers a one-two punch of well-designed gesture controls for a touchscreen combined with beautiful, console-quality graphics. Your device's camera catches punch gestures using the V-Motion Gesture Control System. The game features a surprisingly effective Career Mode, where you develop, train, and customize your prizefighter. You'll be hard-pressed to find flaws with this game as you build up your fighter and even take him online into real-time multiplayer fights over Game Center.

jetpackjoyride.pngJetpack Joyride?(Android) Free Jetpack Joyride, released by Halfbrick Studios on Android in September, is the endless running game closest to perfection. Although it launched and rocketed to the top of the charts on iOS in 2011, the game's presence in the Android Market was substantial. In Jetpack Joyride you play as the fiery and uber-manly Barry Steakfries who swipes a top-secret machine gun-powered jetpack from a laboratory only to be met by thousands of obstacles including electric pillars, rockets, and terrified scientists. Your goal is to collect coins and get as far as you can before dying. The game has an exceptional sense of humor and an impressive array of interchangeable costumes, jetpacks, power-ups, and vehicles. What sets Jetpack Joyride apart is that behind its simple formula, there's a hugely addictive mission/challenge system which pushes you to play again and again. The difficulty and learning curve are set perfectly so even casual gamers will never feel overwhelmed.

theroom.pngThe Room (iPad, iPad mini) $1.99 With The Room, Fireproof Games delivered the most intriguing puzzle game of the year. Mind-bending puzzles, a surreal atmosphere, and delectable 3D graphics in stunning HD quality make The Room a necessary app for every gamer who owns an iPad 2 or higher. The game works ostensibly as a mystery that you solve using a single finger control scheme through puzzles contained within ornate boxes. It is definitely the most realistic looking game released in 2012, even more so than titles from the Zen Bound series. The Room was designed to be a pick up and play game, and although it is rated 9+ for Infrequent Horror/Fear Themes, it is the sort of game you can play with your family if they're cool enough and can handle the suspense.

Iraqi telecom Asiacell hopes to raise $1.3 billion

BAGHDAD (AP) ? One of Iraq's three telecommunications providers is looking to raise $1.3 billion through what is likely to be the country's biggest stock offering yet.

Asiacell said on Tuesday it plans to offer 67.5 billion shares for at least 22 Iraqi dinars, or just under 2 cents, apiece when it launches the initial public offering beginning next month.

The shares being offered represent a quarter of Asiacell's total share capital. The Gulf state of Qatar's Qatar Telecom owns 53.9 percent of the company.

The Iraq Stock Exchange announced the upcoming IPO earlier this month. Tuesday's statement offered the first pricing details for the share floatation.

Asiacell competes against Zain Iraq, part of Kuwait's Zain, and Korek, an affiliate of France Telecom.

Free PLR eBooks Private Label Rights Downloads - Articles Droits ...

Private Label Articles - Get More Useful Content At Low Cost and Effort

Private label rights (PLR) are one of the hottest things in Internet marketing today. Everybody wants to know what they are and, more importantly, what benefits they can get out of them.

In essence, PLR is a kind of license you acquire for material, which allows you to change and edit existing material and call it your own. Without having to do a lot of work, you could be credited as the author of the material and not have to worry about any violations in copyright.

Not a lot of people know about the PLR articles, much less why they should pay attention to them. Give yourself the edge and find out why you should know all you can about PLR and how you can profit from them in the most efficient and effective way possible.

1. Saves time and effort.
You probably already know how much work and time it will take to write an article. On average, a single 700-word article will take about two hours to compose from scratch. If your intention is to create a website with over 50 pages, then you can see how daunting and time-consuming the task of simply writing content will be. PLR articles will save you this time and effort.

2. All credit goes to you.
You are under no obligation to credit the original author for PLR articles. As such, when you publish them on your website, no outbound links and advertisements will be there to distract your visitor / customer. All links will be focused on your brand and your affiliates.

3. Saves you money.
This point requires a different point from saving time and effort simply because of economics. Hiring writers to create content for your website averages about $15 per article. If your site were to hold even just 20 articles that you need to update regularly (say every two weeks), you'd see how the bill could add up.

But if you were to acquire PLR for a set of articles, you could save money because of the economics of scale. Articles are bought at bulk and as such it is possible to get your hands on 200 articles for only less than $30.

4. Editorial freedom.
You don't like how the article is written or the information it is presenting? PLR allows you to change the material right away without needing to ask permission from the writer.
This is also especially useful for optimizing your website for search engines since you can enrich the content with keyword phrases to improve your rankings in SERPs.

5. Create a brand for yourself.
Today, it's all about distinguishing yourself from the rest. PLR articles allow you to provide content that is both relevant and updated. By doing so you build a reputation with your target audience as an expert. And since people would much rather go with someone they trust, your chances of return visitors increases significantly.

6. Get professional results.
Many of the writers who offer articles with PLR are professionals and have access to the latest information regarding your field of interest. By acquiring the rights from them, you avail yourself of their professional results without having to retain their services regularly.

With one set of PLR articles and some creativity on your part, you can extend the life of the articles to the point where the content has more than paid for itself. So when sourcing out a supplier for PLR articles, ask for sample works to demonstrate the quality of articles you would be purchasing.

Now that you know why you should seriously consider getting PLR articles, here are some ways to get you started on profiting from them.

1. Compile a list or report.
You can consolidate a series of articles of a similar theme and package them as a report or listing of information. While you may think that anyone can do this, you'd be surprised how little of this is done.

Many people don't have the time to read or the willingness to read several articles at different times. Providing them a simplified version of the information they want will be a welcome offer for your visitors. You can either give away the report for free, sell it as your own product or use it as content on your website.

2. Use PLR content to create a series of small articles
This is especially useful when producing material for an email campaign. A series is by far, one of the more effective ways to create a following with your audience.

Give enough to allow them a feel for what you're offering and hint at giving more of the same if they will subscribe to your mailing list. In turn, your emails promote your website by inviting them to visit you on a more regular basis.

3. Produce ebooks.
It is very possible for you to take a set of PLR articles and come up with an ebook, for which you can credit yourself as the author.

Since you have created an entirely new product you could repackage this and sell this with your own resale rights. Just like you, there are people who are looking for material they can use for their own promotion needs so cater to this market as they are increasingly growing in number.

Army teams going to Africa as terror threat grows

(AP) ? A U.S. Army brigade will begin sending small teams into as many as 35 African nations early next year, part of an intensifying Pentagon effort to train countries to battle extremists and give the U.S. a ready and trained force to dispatch to Africa if crises requiring the U.S. military emerge.

The teams will be limited to training and equipping efforts, and will not be permitted to conduct military operations without specific, additional approvals from the secretary of defense.

The sharper focus on Africa by the U.S. comes against a backdrop of widespread insurgent violence across North Africa, and as the African Union and other nations discuss military intervention in northern Mali.

The terror threat from al-Qaida linked groups in Africa has been growing steadily, particularly with the rise of the extremist Islamist sect Boko Haram in Nigeria. Officials also believe that the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, which killed the ambassador and three other Americans, may have been carried out by those who had ties to al-Qaida in the Islamic Maghreb.

This first-of-its-kind brigade assignment ? involving teams from the 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division ? will target countries such as Libya, Sudan, Algeria and Niger, where al-Qaida-linked groups have been active. It also will assist nations like Kenya and Uganda that have been battling al-Shabab militants on the front lines in Somalia.

Gen. Carter Ham, the top U.S. commander in Africa, noted that the brigade has a small drone capability that could be useful in Africa. But he also acknowledged that he would need special permission to tap it for that kind of mission.

"If they want them for (military) operations, the brigade is our first sourcing solution because they're prepared," said Gen. David Rodriguez, the head of U.S. Army Forces Command. "But that has to go back to the secretary of defense to get an execute order."

Already the U.S. military has plans for nearly 100 different exercises, training programs and other activities across the widely diverse continent. But the new program faces significant cultural and language challenges, as well as nagging questions about how many of the lower-level enlisted members of the brigade, based in Fort Riley, Kan., will participate, since the teams would largely be made up of more senior enlisted troops and officers. A full brigade numbers about 3,500, but the teams could range from just a few people to a company of about 200. In rare cases for certain exercises, it could be a battalion, which would number about 800.

To bridge the cultural gaps with the African militaries, the Army is reaching out across the services, the embassies and a network of professional organizations to find troops and experts that are from some of the African countries. The experts can be used during training, and the troops can both advise or travel with the teams as they begin the program.

"In a very short time frame we can only teach basic phrases," said Col. Matthew McKenna, commander of the 162nd Infantry Brigade that will begin training the Fort Riley soldiers in March for their African deployment. "We focus on culture and the cultural impact ? how it impacts the African countries' military and their operations."

Thomas Dempsey, a professor with the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, said the biggest challenge will be the level of cultural, language and historical diversity across the far-flung continent.

"How do you train for that in a way that would be applicable wherever they go?" said Dempsey, a retired Army colonel. He said he's not sure using a combat brigade is the right answer, but added, "I'm not sure what the answer is. The security challenges differ so dramatically that, to be honest, I really don't think it's feasible to have a continental training package."

The Pentagon's effort in Africa, including the creation of U.S. Africa Command in 2007, has been carefully calibrated, largely due to broad misgivings across the continent that it could spawn American bases or create the perception of an undue U.S. military influence there. As a result, the command has been based in Stuttgart, Germany, rather than on the African continent.

At the same time, many African nations are eager for U.S. training or support, as they work to build their militaries, battle pirates along the coast and shut down drug trafficking, kidnapping and other insurgent activities.

McKenna acknowledged the challenge, but said the military has to tap its conventional fighting forces for this task because there aren't enough special operations forces to meet the global training needs. He said there will be as many as a dozen different training segments between February and September, each designed to provide tailored instruction for the particular teams.

The mission for the 2nd Brigade ? known as the "Dagger Brigade" ? will begin in the spring and will pave the way for Army brigades to be assigned next to U.S. Pacific Command and then to U.S. European Command over the next year. The brigade is receiving its regular combat training first, and then will move on to the more specific instruction needed for the deployments, such as language skills, cultural information and other data about the African nations.

Dagger Brigade commander Col. Jeff Broadwater said the language and culture training will be different than what most soldiers have had in recent years, since they have focused on Pashtun and Farsi, languages used mostly in Afghanistan and Iran. He said he expects the soldiers to learn French, Swahili, Arabic or other languages, as well as the local cultures.

"What's really exciting is we get to focus on a different part of the world and maintain our core combat skills," Broadwater said, adding that the soldiers know what to expect. "You see those threats (in Africa) in the news all the time."

The brigade will be carved up into different teams designed to meet the specific needs of each African nation. As the year goes on, the teams will travel from Fort Riley to those nations ? all while trying to avoid any appearance of a large U.S. military footprint.

"The challenge we have is to always understand the system in their country," said Rodriguez, who has been nominated to be the next head of Africa Command. "We're not there to show them our system, we're there to make their system work. Here is what their army looks like, and here is what we need to prepare them to do."

Rodriguez said the nearly 100 assignments so far requested by Ham will be carried out with "a very small footprint to get the high payoff."

Home for the holidays: how to use today's technology to bring your ...

By Dan Seifert and Andrew Webster

Traditionally, the holidays are for family. For many people, it?s a chance to see family members that may live a great distance away, spend time with new in-laws or new arrivals, and of course, exchange gifts. But frequently, those very gifts actually separate us from our family, isolating us from others. Popular items such as smartphones, tablets, and video games can encourage us to run away from our family and hide in another room playing with our new toys. But that doesn?t have to be the case. In fact, these new high tech gifts can actually encourage us to spend more time with our families ? and can make that experience better than it?s ever been.

Cross-platform mobile apps

Since everyone from Grandma to your eight-year-old sister seems to be carrying a smartphone these days, why not play some cross-platform games with them that lets everyone use their new toys without isolating anyone? Words With Friends, the ubiquitous mobile game that takes Scrabble and makes it social, can be found on almost every mobile platform these days, so that cousin of yours who insists on using a Windows Phone needn't be left out. Your relatives that still haven?t moved over to a smartphone or tablet can even play through Facebook on a Mac or PC. Likewise, games such as Draw Something, Uno, and even the EA?s version of Scrabble can be played across platforms with other family members.

You?ve never felt the satisfaction of totally crushing your brother-in-law during a game of 'Words With Friends'

We know what you are going to say: "But I can play these games against my family members any time, even when I?m holed up in my bedroom ignoring the holiday goings-on." Sure, that may be true, but clearly you?ve never felt the satisfaction of totally crushing your brother-in-law during a game of Words With Friends and being able to gloat about it in person in front of your entire family.

If you?ve got multiple iPads or iPhones in the family, Spaceteam is a great way to yell at your family members. Each player is given a random control panel filled with technobabble, and you?ll have to work together to control a rapidly breaking spaceship. But it?s not just a simple button mashing game: players are given the necessary instructions for other people?s control panels, meaning that they?ll have to shout across the room to keep the spaceship intact.

Other options for mobile games include "pass and play" types like Carcassonne, which encourage users to share a single device and pass it around for each turn. Carcassonne even comes with an easy mode for the little ones to pick up and run with. But if you're want something a little more action-heavy, the frantic fun of Fruit Ninja includes a split-screen mode so that you can slice pineapples alongside grandma. If you?re not afraid of actually touching your opponents, the Twister-style Fingle is a great way to get up close and personal with family. Then again, a game doesn't necessarily need a multiplayer mode to be fun to pass around: sometimes two heads are better than one when it comes to getting three stars in Angry Birds Star Wars levels, and it's always useful to have a second pair of eyes in word games like Spelltower.

If your family is more interested in sitting down for a slower-paced game, you should check out Catan HD ? the tablet version of the renowned Settlers of Catan board game.

Gaming consoles

Even if you don't come from a family of gamers, there are plenty of ways to enjoy those boxes sitting under your television this holiday season. Rock Band and Guitar Hero may not be as popular as they once were, but that doesn't mean they aren't still a whole lot of fun ? and the holidays are the perfect time to dust off your collection of plastic instruments. The sheer range of downloadable songs available, including recent additions like "Call Me Maybe," means that it's pretty easy to find a song that just about everybody knows, and if there's someone who's intimidated by rocking out on a plastic guitar? Well, looks like you just found your lead singer.

If you just want to enjoy some music without having to bother with plastic peripherals, Harmonix's Dance Central series is the way to go. Your aunt may have heard about this weird new Kinect thing, but she probably hasn't actually tried it, so maybe it's time for her (and the rest of the family) to hit the dance floor. Not only is it a fun way to whittle away the hours waiting for Santa, but rocking out to "Gangnam Style" will also help burn off those holiday pounds.

Mariokartwii

For something a little more competitive, nothing beats 'Mario Kart'

For something a little more competitive, nothing beats Mario Kart. The infamous blue shell is gaming's great equalizer, which makes just about every incarnation of Mario Kart perfect for family play time. The Wii version is great for gathering around the television, and if you have the gear there's also plenty of fun to be had with the multiplayer modes in the DS and 3DS versions. But if you're looking to add a little cooperative play to your competitive racing, we suggest dusting off that Mario Kart Double Dash disc for the GameCube: the tag-team mechanic is the ideal way for veterans and newbies alike to play together.

While you've got that Wii out, it's a great time to revisit a family-fun classic, Wii Sports. Remember having everyone huddled around the TV, swinging their arms wildly while playing golf or boxing on that shiny new Wii? Those mini-games remain as fun as ever. And with the addition of Wii Sports Resort, you have even more choices to play through this time around. Now is the time to remind yourself what a case of virtual tennis elbow feels like... and you?re going to need to kill some time while the new Wii U updates anyway.

Roku_2_xs1_1020_large_verge_medium_landscape

Smart TVs and streaming

Mobile devices aren?t the only popular things given as gifts this time of year ? set-top boxes and smart TVs are all the rage too. Why not take that new, connected internet TV experience and turn it into a shared experience with the entire family? Once you are sick of watching A Christmas Story on cable for the thousandth time, you can gather everyone around the set and stream holiday classics like A Wonderful Life (Netflix), A Charlie Brown Christmas (Hulu), or Miracle on 34th Street (iTunes).

If you're tired of the oldies ? and you?re okay with exposing the young ones to a little action and blue language ? then use your set-top box to stream other holiday favorites like Die Hard or Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. Wrap up the evening with some selections from the James Bond series or the John Hughes classic Home Alone.

Then again, if children outnumber the adults in your family, give Matilda, Rango, or The Secret of Kells a shot.

Cooking with your new technology

One of the most common things that people do during the holidays is eat, and that means that someone has to cook or bake all of those tasty treats. That gives you a perfect opportunity to get everyone involved ? even the kids ? in baking, cooking, and decorating holiday confections. Apps like Food Network?s In the Kitchen (available for Android and iOS) and Big Oven (for Android, iOS, and Windows Phone) offer recipes and pictures to walk you through making all of those holiday favorites. Jamie Oliver?s apps provide even more recipe options when you?re out of ideas in the kitchen.

Sharing special moments

Don?t be the person who sends an email with a dozen family snapshots as huge attachments. Instead, try a photo-sharing network like Flickr, Instagram, or ? if you?re a more ambitious family photographer ? 500px. (For the holidays, Flickr is offering new and existing users three months of its Pro service for free, giving you unlimited uploads and high-res downloads.)

If you want to try something a little fancier on your phone, Big Lens offers some some advanced photo editing and filtering tools. For video, you can add some excitement to your films with Action Movie FX, or try to capture everlasting moments with Cinemagram.

Gadgets can isolate us, but they don't have to. Chances are good that a lot of people in your family are going to get some sort of technology as a gift for this holidays ? but as you can see, it?s not hard to integrate it into your existing holiday celebrations. In fact, your new toys can make the whole holiday experience more bearable than ever.

PFT: Vick says his prime is still ahead of him

Untitled 2Getty Images

[Editor's note:? This is my first post of the day from Amtrak's Pennsylvanian, a 9.5-hour trek from Pittsburgh to New York City.? Which is about as long as it takes to drive there and halfway back.]

If the fans have their way, Bills S Jairus Byrd will be a Pro Bowl starter.

The Patriots have plenty of connections to their upcoming opponent in Jacksonville.

With $45 million in cap space and nine draft picks, 2013 could be the year that Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland sinks or swims.

Like Tim Tebow, offensive coordinator Tony Sparano may be one and done with the Jets.

Browns LB D?Qwell Jackson accepts the fact that changes are coming ? again ? in Cleveland; ?Been down here, this road, a little bit,? Jackson said. ??That?s been the majority of my career, every couple of years there?s a new regime. ?It?s a bottom-line business. You?ve got to win in this business, and we all understand it.?

Ravens RB Ray Rice knows that his touches are tied to the team?s overall effectiveness on offense.

There?s still time for Steelers fans to submit their own videos explaining where they were for the Immaculate Reception. ?(Our guess is that Three Rivers Stadium, which held roughly 50,000, had a capacity of 500,000 that day.? Or more.)

When it comes to the importance of Sunday?s game at Pittsburgh, Bengals coach Marvin Lewis is pragmatic;??It?s a really big game for us and for our young players it?s a chance for them to have an opportunity to keep playing; that?s what we?re here for,? Lewis said.

A limited number of $20 tickets will be available Saturday morning for the Jaguars? home game against New England.

Titans RB Chris Johnson thinks Adrian Peterson should win the league MVP award.

The Texans will hold a silent auction to benefit the victims of the Newtown shooting.

Colts WR Reggie Wayne knows that the 2-12 Chiefs will be playing to win on Sunday, because Wayne recalls that?s what the Colts did down the stretch last year.

Original Broncos S Austin ?Goose? Gonsoulin is recovering from heart surgery and cancer and enjoying the current edition of his former team; ?I remember exactly what that feels like,? Gonsoulin said of the 98-yard interception return from CB Chris Harris.

As the Norv Turner tenure comes to a conclusion with the Chargers, Turner faces the team responsible for his most important defeat.

The bad news?? The Raiders have 17 players who will become unrestricted free agents in March.? The good news?? The Raiders have 17 players who will become unrestricted free agents in March.

Welcome to PFT Planet, Giants WR Hakeem Nicks.

When the Eagles host Washington on Sunday, RB Brian Westbrook will serve as an honorary captain.

Cowboys TE Jason Witten still has a strong relationship with his former coach, Bill Parcells.

In many statistical categories, the Redskins are either really good or really bad.

A year after having the worst defense in the league, the Packers are now in the middle of the pack.

The Bears will use their fifth different combination of offensive linemen in five games against Arizona on Sunday.

Three years ago, it was ?Pants on the Ground?; now, the Vikings are breakdancing.

For Lions LB Stephen Tulloch, the glass is still five-percent full; ?This is a great opportunity to play on national television and show the fans and the people across the country that the Lions, we?ve been down but we?re coming back heading into next season,? Tulloch said.

LB Jonathan Vilma and DE Will Smith could be cap casualties for the Saints.

Falcons LT Sam Baker, who has rebounded after a difficult 2011, hopes to remain with the team beyond the expiration of his rookie contract in March.

For Buccaneers LT Donald Penn, the secret to his success is a different sport; ?I don?t think I?d be as good of an athlete if it wasn?t for basketball,? Penn said. ?I don?t think I?d be as good of a left tackle.?

The Panthers welcome former RB Mike Goodson to town on Sunday, fresh from an 89-yard rushing day, his best performance with Oakland.

Cardinals defensive coordinator Ray Horton raved about CB Patrick Peterson; ?He could really be the Bo Jackson, the two-way player. He is a phenomenal athlete that isn?t missing anything. ?He has the smarts, the will, the desire, the heart, the drive, any adjective you want to throw in there he has.?

Seahawks WR Sidney Rice is questionable for Sunday, but coach Pete Carroll thinks he?ll play; ?We?re still going to make sure he can run on game day,? Carroll said. ?He feels pretty good right now.? But we?ve got to get to game day and run him and see how he can tolerate it.? He thinks he?s playing.? He feels like he?s going to.?

The Rams fired Mike Martz seven years ago, but this year they can?t get away from him.

As 49ers DL Ricky Jean Francois was grilled by the media about his preparedness to play in place of Justin Smith, WR Randy Moss and OL Mike Iupati joined in the questioning.

Syrian civil war at stalemate, Assad won't go: Russia

BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syria's civil war has reached stalemate and international efforts to persuade President Bashar al-Assad to quit will fail, Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Saturday.

Mainly Sunni Muslim rebels seeking to overthrow Assad are fighting on the edge of the capital Damascus and expanding southwards from their northern strongholds in Aleppo and Idlib into the central province of Hama.

But Assad, from the Alawite minority linked to Shi'ite Islam, has responded with artillery, air strikes and - according to the NATO military alliance which is stationing anti-missile defenses in neighboring Turkey - with Scud-type missiles.

The Kremlin's Middle East envoy was quoted as saying earlier this month that the rebels could defeat Assad's forces and that Moscow was preparing a possible evacuation of Russians, the strongest signs yet that it is preparing for a post-Assad Syria.

That followed concerted calls from Western powers and some Arab countries for Assad to step down before Syria's 21-month-old conflict, which has killed more than 44,000 people according to activists, wreaks more destruction.

But Lavrov said the Syrian president was not about to bow to pressure from opponents or more sympathetic leaders in Moscow and Beijing.

"Listen, no one is going to win this war," he told reporters aboard a government plane en route to Moscow from the Russia-EU summit in Brussels. "Assad is not going anywhere, no matter what anyone says, be it China or Russia."

Lavrov said Russia had rejected requests from countries in the region to pressure Assad to go or offer him safe haven, and warned that his exit might lead to an upsurge in fighting.

He also said Syrian authorities were gathering the country's chemical weapons in one or two areas and that they were "under control" for the time being. "Currently the (Syrian) government is doing all it can to secure (chemical weapons), according to intelligence data we have and the West has," he said.

Western countries said three weeks ago that Assad's government might be preparing to use poison gas to counter rebels who are encamped around his capital and control rural Aleppo and Idlib in the north.

REBEL WARNINGS

In central Hama province, where rebels say they have taken most of the rural territory west of Hama city, fighters threatened to storm two mainly Christian towns which they said Assad's forces were using as bases to attack them.

A video released by the rebels showed seven armed fighters of the Ansar Brigade demanding that residents of Mahrada and al-Suqeilabiya evict Assad's forces.

In Aleppo, rebel leader Colonel Abdel-Jabbar al-Oqaidi said his fighters considered the skies above Aleppo to be a no-fly zone and repeated a warning that they would attack planes using the city's airport.

Snipers fired at an airliner preparing to take off from Aleppo on Thursday, forcing it to abandon its departure.

"The airport was being used as a military airport to transport troops and (Iranian) Revolutionary Guards," Oqaidi told Reuters. "We forbid planes from flying in Syrian air space. We will set up a no-fly zone."

In Damascus, a car bomb killed five people and wounded dozens in the eastern district of Qaboun on Saturday, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

Video footage which activists said was filmed at the site of the explosion showed a white car in flames in the centre of a street filled with concrete rubble and furniture from at least one building which had collapsed.

The British-based Observatory, which monitors violence across Syria through a network of sources on the ground, also reported clashes between rebels and forces loyal to Assad on the southern edge of the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp, taken over by rebels this week.

Three people were killed by snipers and the army sent reinforcements to the perimeter of Yarmouk, which is described as a camp but in reality is a dense concentration of concrete buildings housing descendants of Palestinians who fled the 1948 fighting at the creation of the state of Israel.

The Observatory says 44,000 people have been killed in Syria since the uprising erupted against Assad in March last year.

International envoy Lakhdar Brahimi, who tried in vain to secure a four-day truce in November to mark the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, will visit Syria in the next few days for talks with Assad, a source in the Cairo-based Arab League said.

The source said no date for such a visit had been announced but he expected it would be within a few days. "Lakhdar Brahimi's team does not want to announce the time of the visit too early, perhaps for logistical or security reasons," he said.

How fiscal cliff talks fell apart behind closed doors

The first family arrived in the president's idyllic home state of Hawaii early today to celebrate the holidays, but President Obama, who along with Michelle will pay tribute Sunday to the late Sen. Daniel Inouye at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, could be returning home to Washington sooner than he expected.

That's because the President didn't get his Christmas wish: a deal with Congress on the looming fiscal cliff.

Members of Congress streamed out of the Capitol Friday night with no agreement to avert the fiscal cliff -- a massive package of mandatory tax increases and federal spending cuts triggered if no deal is worked out to cut the deficit. Congress is expected to be back in session by Thursday.

It's unclear when President Obama may return from Hawaii. His limited vacation time will not be without updates on continuing talks. Staff members for both sides are expected to exchange emails and phone calls over the next couple of days.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House John Boehner is home in Ohio. He recorded the weekly GOP address before leaving Washington, stressing the president's role in the failure to reach an agreement on the cliff.

"What the president has offered so far simply won't do anything to solve our spending problem and begin to address our nation's crippling debt," he said in the recorded address, "The House has done its part to avert this entire fiscal cliff. ... The events of the past week make it clearer than ever that these measures reflect the will of the House."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell echoed the sentiment while lamenting the failure to reach a compromise.

"I'm stuck here in Washington trying to prevent my fellow Kentuckians having to shell out more money to Uncle Sam next year," he said.

McConnell is also traveling to Hawaii to attend the Inouye service Sunday.

If the White House and Congress cannot reach a deficit-cutting budget agreement by year's end, by law the across-the-board tax hikes and spending cuts -- the so called fiscal cliff -- will go into effect. Many economists say that will likely send the economy into a new recession.

Reports today shed light on how negotiations fell apart behind closed doors. The Wall Street Journal, citing unnamed sources, reported that when Boehner expressed his opposition to tax rate increases, the president allegedly responded, "You are asking me to accept Mitt Romney's tax plan. Why would I do that?"

The icy exchange continued when, in reference to Boehner's offer to secure $800 billion in revenue by limiting deductions, the speaker reportedly implored the president, "What do I get?"

The president's alleged response: "You get nothing. I get that for free."

The account is perhaps the most thorough and hostile released about the series of unsuccessful talks Obama and Boehner have had in an effort to reach an agreement about the cliff.

Unable to agree to a "big deal" on taxes and entitlements, the president is now reportedly hoping to reach a "small deal" with Republicans to avoid the fiscal cliff.

Such a deal would extend unemployment benefits and set the tone for a bigger deal with Republicans down the line.

In his own weekly address, Obama called this smaller deal "an achievable goal ... that can get done in 10 days."

But though there is no definitive way to say one way or the other whether it really is an achievable goal, one thing is for certain: Republican leadership does not agree with the president on this question.

Of reaching an agreement on the fiscal cliff by the deadline, Boehner said, "How we get there, God only knows."
